I am getting some strange errors. I have a G5 with a and external 300gb hd. Imovie, when opening a file off the external will often crash, I go to the console and i see many I/O errors then imovie crashing. This happens in idvd too. When exporting to the drive in FCP 5 it fails with an I/O error and dvd studio pro also does this.

I think the I/O error is pretty serrious, am i right? should i get everything off the drive? Is somthing wrong with my G5?

It's quite a general error that means OSX is having trouble reading and writing to the drive. Open Disk Utility and try repairing the external drive. If that doesn't help, then see if you can get your hands on a different cable or enclosure to test your current ones. Also, would reformatting the drive be an option if it comes to that?
