My apple care is expiring soon and has a few scratches so I will be doing a mail-in repair. The Apple Website says that "Back up your device. It will be erased". Is this true? I don't see why apple would need to erase my device for a front screen replacement. I would wait for stores to open up, but my apple care is expiring in two weeks.

Even though there is no reason to mess with the storage during screen replacement, it is best to follow Apple procedure. If something happens and they need to do more than intended, you don’t want to be without a back up upon return.

Apple recommends backing up your device as a precautionary measure. What's the problem with backing it up before sending it in? Make a good backup both to your Mac and to iCloud.

That is true, I did an iCloud and Itunes backup. But there are photos that I cannot backup due to glitches with the photos app (duplicates, every time I backup photos).

Again, I was asking for people's experiences, I know there is a risk of the device needing to be erased.

If nothing goes wrong during a repair, a backup isn't necessary. But a trouble free repair is not 100% guaranteed. There's a small chance that the phone could get bricked during a repair and apple knows this (and obviously has experienced it) so they make a point to scare people into backing up the device before sending it in - otherwise nobody would do it and they'd get the blame when things go wrong.

Removing the screen on a modern iPhone is a lot more risky than the old iPhones. The old iPhone screens were easy and relatively risk free to remove. The new phones have screens held in with gluey adhesive and getting them off is like performing open heart surgery on a patient (not my words but a direct quote from an apple repair tech).

He said- any time the screen is removed there's a risk of the phone getting irrecoverably damaged.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, just scared me a bit when it said it will be erased versus it could be erased. Anyways I will back it up again when the box arrives to ship it to the service center.

I sent my device in and they said there was a crack in the bottom housing so it will be $99 bucks. Which I think is just BS, I inspected my device and found nothing wrong except space gray coating wearing a bit. I guess this is what I get for assuming apple was content with the money I gave for the warranty. They won't even deal with the coating, saying it is my fault. The first time being cheated by apple and funny enough they want to call me but I can't since they have my phone.

"thoroughly inspected" yea hmmm
