I didn't know you have to turn off the phone before putting in/removing a SD card.
Would this cause any damage to the phone or SD card?

..................Not to sure, but one thing I do know is you should always unmount your SD Card before removing it. Otherwise you could end up with a corrupt card. Who knows, maybe putting in a card while the phone is on can so the same damage.
On some phones, they use the SD card instead of the built-in storage as the main SDcard partition. So you risk a lot of apps freaking out if you've moved them to the SD, or they disappear entirely.
What are some of the phones that uses the main SDcard parition for apps?
The low-end Huawei I had did. I never stuck one in my Skyrocket so I don't know about Samsung. If the phone wrote anything to the card, that would be an indication.
Again, your apps would be freaking out if it was storing anything in the card. Like force closing.
Interesting, I think one is able to move Apps to the SD card on the S4. I just recently did.
If you weren't supposed to do this while the device was on then they would've blocked the SD card slot with the battery like they do with the sim card slot. Though since you can usually remove a sim card while a device is on I'm not real sure why that is blocked on the S4.
