Being a long time PC user and system programmer, I am quite suprised at myself for having the audacity of trying a Mac at the local computer store and for wanting more of the experience. So much so that I ditched my fairly new Acer dual core notebook in favor of a 12" Powerbook. Boy, what a difference in the user experience. I have been using this little wonder for a couple of months without experiencing a single crash. I still marvel at the Os elegance, and the attention given to the smallest details, from packaging to application screen presentation. I now understand why so many of you swear by Apple. I am afraid I am now in the process of joining the club.

This Itune thing really rocks!!

I am really, really happy for you. We hear it day in day out - nearly every PC user switching to Mac says the same things.

Mac really is a great platform - enjoy it and all the things you can do with it!

Congrats! I hope to be doing the same thing shortly. The only experience I've had on a Mac is at a freinds house with his Mac Mini G4. Subiob.

It is good to see new successful and happy switchers. Their are many people on this board that can help you with any questions you may have.

I'm glad that you like the Mac experience. ..and welcome to MR again...I hope we will see you around...

I love my Powerbook too but I still use my PC more often. I find that the G4's just too slow to work on the Powerbook day to day. That an I've grown quite comfortable with Windows.

You mentioned your mac not crashing, well my PC hasn't crashed in a long time. I don't understand everybody's notion that PC's crash all the time. If you've built a good stable fast machine, productivity on PC's are just as good as on a Mac.

That said though, I still love my Powerbook. I just can't imagine using it as my main machine.

You mippselt "cult".

In the past year:
  • I've switched
  • My wife is going to get the new iBook replacement when they come out.
  • two ex-colleagues (I left the company) bought Mac Minis (also their first Macs)
  • my brother has looked enviously at my iMac and is seriously tempted especially if windows gets easy to install (he owns a lot of Windows software)
  • at lunch yesterday with five of my co-workers I learned that three of us had Macs and one wanted one but was in the process of upgrading his PC so couldn't yet afford it
  • a friend of my wife visited a couple of weeks ago with her new 17" Dell XPS laptop (just what are those blue LEDs for?) for my help setting it up, and spent more time on my iMac than on her laptop (I think she left us feeling buyer's remorse)
  • another friend of my wife visited yesterday and both her and her husband had bought last revision 15" PBs since we saw them last just before the new year
  • one of our IT guys (typically Windows-only) has a MBP sitting on his desk, and seems to spend more time on it than the Dell D810 that's sitting beside it.

well... great... although you should have got yourself an Intel iMac instead of a 12" PB.... it seems more like a more worthy investment at this time to me...

welcome to the Mac community anyway :)

A good stable fast machine....hmmm...

Here is an abreviated list describing my Windows gripes,

1) Unwanted advertising pop ups while surfing the web.
2) Spyware continuously creeping up in the system. Periodically I need to manually remove the one I can find, to no avail because they keep coming back. I don't feel I should have to purchase multi-level spyware blocking software to solve this problem.
3) Boot time is getting longer as Windows is used. Perusing the registry reveals that various deamons are being installed without my knowledge. I think some of them monitor my web surfing habits, and god only knows what else.
4) Inconsistent printing from Internet Explorer and other apps. The output is often clipped (no print to fit in many apps).
5) When Windows is configured to suspend to disk when the lid closes on a notebook, every so often, Windows does not complete the suspend to disk operation when the lid closes, so the battery completely drains. Just as often Windows hangs while resuming. I see this with several notebooks.
6)Every once in a while, shutdown operations do not complete. I have to manually shutdown (unplug the power). But doing this sometimes leads to lenghty file system checks when the system is restarted.

Need I go on ??? By contrast, I have been using OS X continuously for several months, and I have not seen any the above problems. This OS is rock solid, period.

I purchased a Macbook yesterday. The price was stiff ($2700 and change), but upon hearing the "boing" song on powerup, I knew I made the right decision.

Here is another thing. With Windows, I would have to reinstall all my apps, which would take weeks. On the MAC, all I had to do is establish a 1394 connection between the Macbook and the Powrbook and _all_ the files were updated in less than 2 hours (incredible!).

Welcome to the good side! :D

(iTunes is also available for Windows... it just looks and performs better on the Mac, though. :))

Yes I used Itune for Windows at the beginning, but it was too obvious that this app. was not designed for Windows. It was kind of like trying to use Codewarior for Windows, it worked but did not feel right.

the switch is nowhere near complete.the 12inch pb is my first mac too..

first two months i was like.. OSX is nice, really beatiful, easy, but its not like i hate XP.. so i used XP at home and pb at school.. now nearly 6 mos later.. i begin to almost completly stop using my desktop at home w/ xp and work on my pb..
trust me. slowly you will begin to use OSX more and more.. almost like they put some kind of coke in these machines that u sniff somehow or smthn.. ur windows comp may be faster.. but if that is still a factor, i can see you 8 mos from now, getting a faster mac!

That's pretty much exactly what I did too. Now I hardly ever use my PC desktop and use my iBook at home, school, and anytime I need the computer. I love OSX and have gotten more used to it than Windows. And now... I wish I could get an iMac too... *sigh* lol, maybe someday, when I'm finished with grad school and have a job to support my expensive habit. haha Enjoy! :)

I switched just over a year ago with a Mac Mini, and I had just built a powerhouse Windows box less than 6 months before that. I work everyday with XP, and I just get so tired of continually waiting for it to respond. I also got tired of the continual housework needed at home to keep my windows machines running well. When I bought my first mini I know that I was hooked. Winthin 2 weeks after getting the mini my new Windows box was never turned on again. Now I have a mini, an iMac G5, a clamshell iBook 300, and a 1.5Ghz 15" PowerBook which I just bought to replace the mini. I must use Windows at work, but at home I will never go back.
