I recommend unlocking only, not jailbreaking!

I had my iPhone 2G 8G unlocked and jailbroken with T-Mobile, with just a few extras installed: Clippy, Winterboard w/ Mario SMS, transparent dock, reflective dock and Cyntact.

Programs ran slow, quit unexpectedly and YouTube refused to work. Restored fresh 2.2.1 unlock only and this thing is snappieness™ to a T! Even battery life seems improved! LOVE IT!

It's worth the wait for a 3.0 unlock for all the things you can get in Cydia if it means your phone will run smoothly and efficiently! Just thought I'd share my story!

That may be true.
However, it should be noted that many of us depend on these Applications.
Such as tethering. IMO

I ran Pwnage and un-checked Cydia and Installer, so that just bootneuter ran again and didn't add anything extra to the firmware. All I know is that this "new" iPhone is blazing fast!

Just because you aren't using Cydia or Installer doesn't mean your phone isn't jailbroken! But yeah, I get what you're saying. More apps mo' problems...

Buying IPhone on craigslist

I've been wanting an Iphone for a looong time, but I didn't want to go with at&t. I recently found a guy on craigslist that has a 3g, 8gb iphone that he wants to sell for a good price. He had at&t but said the service didn't work at his house, so he went back to verizon. The phone is not unlocked and I want to make sure it works before I buy it.

I'm meeting him in a parking lot today and I would like to unlock it there and make a phone call using my tmobile sim card.

I'm a complete newbie..never used the iphone and don't know much about the Iphone software. I am a technical person and can follow clear instructions.

My question is, what would you suggest that I do to unlock it in the parking lot and what should I look out for?

you'll have to take a laptop with quickpwn or pwnage in it and a usb iphone cable as well as have a simunlock such as turbosim or whichever other. When you get his phone restore it, jailbreak it and insert your sim with unlock chip.. try and call. Should work.

I totally understand the being cautious before buying from strangers, when I sold my T-Mobile BlackBerry to another T-Mobile customer I allowed him to insert his sim and make calls before buying.

With that said... However, unlocking a AT&T phone to use on another network to see if it works before buying is unlikely. (That is - if the seller knows what you're asking for and what he is getting into). Say that you unlock it incorrectly, or something goes wrong... or through no fault of your own, the unlock does not take or the phone just does not work for any reason. You unlocking the sellers iPhone void's the warranty.

To me, unlocking to use on another network is a risk for the buyer...

just make sure you advise him of what the procedures are so that neither of you will waste your time. If you do have a sim unlock chip and are able to hactivate the phone through jailbreaking, it is almost 100 guaranteed that it'll work

FWIW, the original iPhone also stays unlocked as long as the baseband isn't updated, which hasn't happened with any recent update... so another, albeit more complicated, way to end up with an unlocked but not jailbreaked phone is to jailbreak and unlock it once, and then simply restore it with Apple's unmodified firmware, directly from iTunes. After that is done, the phone is no longer jailbreaked, but it remains unlocked.

There are a small number of us who did this at some point and just stopped bothering with jailbreaking for a variety of reasons. So for instance I jailbreaked 2.0.1, I think, but I've been unlocked only, using the official updates, ever since.
