I refuse to buy an Apple Silicon Mac with only 8 GB RAM!

I'm aware that 8 GB RAM as of now fits most people's needs. And that the Si/ARM SoC technology isn't as RAM dependent as x86.

But macs are so expensive that I want them to last for regular use for a very long time. We know nothing of that now.

I have had my 2012 mini since 2013 and it works just fine. But, then, I installed 16 GB RAM immediately, and feel secure with that. 8 GB RAM for the future, not upgradeble, no way.

If the entry level gets 16 GB of RAM, and today's prices continue, I'll buy one. But not otherwise.

Buy when you need and what you need. There's nothing like future-proofing, so beware of over-spending on what you might never need in the long run (or before updating to another machine, that is). That's what I've learned in the past years

If Ford discontinued the base model Mustang then the GT becomes the new “base model”. Do you think Ford will start selling the GT for the price of the old base model?

Also yes in time RAM will slowly increase as it becomes cheaper but not till it becomes the new minimum requirement. Just like we had 4 GB forever and 8 GB was the “upgrade”. Eventually we’ll have a 16 GB base model but by then you’ll likely feel the need for 24 or 32 GB.

No, I won’t. Base 8 GB RAM was a massive (100 percent) improvement when it came some five or more years ago, so will 16 GB be.

I’ve got an 8gb Mac mini. It’s fine. Modern machines have “infinite” memory thanks to swap anyway 🤷‍♀️

I think you should email Tim Cook and warn him that you refuse to buy a new Mac until the base spec models come with 16GB RAM minimum, for the same price.

Then don't buy one with 8 gb of RAM. The 14/16 inch Macbook Pros have 16 gbs as base spec, and the Mac Studio has 32 gbs base spec. Or just buy an M1 Macbook Air/Mac Mini with 16 gbs of RAM. I did last year.

What's the point of your thread? Apple offers 16GB of RAM option but you don't want to pay for it, so you're not buying anything until it's 16GB of RAM base...but what you're really saying is you don't want to pay up for the base MacBook Pro with 16GB of RAM. If you really need 16GB of RAM but don't want the MacBook Pro then pay the $200 extra in the Air or iMac or whatever.

For the premium prices Apple charges I do think the base RAM should be bumped to 16 gigs. They know people will keep paying though for upgraded machines with 16 gigs of RAM or more. So if they were to remove the base 8 they would lose money. I seriously doubt there is a huge price difference on the backend between 8 gigs and 16 gigs. Apple is slow to do this, they did this for ages with the 64 gig iPhone, that storage option was way past over due to being bumped up to 128 gig.
