iPod I still don't know what this piece is for

I've have many ipods and many of these things but I have no idea what their use is. You can't stand the ipod up because of the cord so why do they even put this in the box?

They are dock adaptors and fit in the apple universal dock.

They're also good for leaving on the carpet and stepping on at night.
