As of late, a couple of songs will not play in iTunes. I noticed this when I tried to copy songs to my iPod and certain ones wouldn't transfer. When I try to play them on my computer, I get the spinning beach ball of death (by the way, these songs did work at one time). I'm worried that this is the beginning of the end for my hard drive. I've booted from my Mac OS X installation disc and Disc Utility says the hard drive is fine. S.M.A.R.T. status is also fine. I don't think I can contact Apple Support, however. I bought the computer in March, but my "complimentary 9 days of free technical support" are up. I believe the warranty is for a year, but I'm not sure how I go about fixing my computer without having to pay apple for support. What should I do?

Although it is possible that it is a hard drive problem there are plenty of other things that could explain what you described. (Assuming no other indicators such as abnormal hard drive noise or issues with other files.)

In terms of what you can do to get support, you can go into an Apple store and get help at the Genius Bar.

1) Take a complete backup
2) Book off your install CD/DVD and use Disk Utility (from the installer) and verify the disk.
3) If you have cross-linked files you do not have a disk-level hardware problem. You have encountered a wierd situation were 2 files have ended up on the same bit of disk. Reformat, reinstall and restore from backup. If you get bad sectors etc your drive might be failing.
