I think my macbook pro is underperforming

Hi i just picked up final cut pro for my macbook pro and i was planning on buying a canon hv20 when they come out for hd edditing however after working with some hd clips both 720P and 1080P i have found it miserable. The playback is choppy and dropping frame constantly. Its miserable to use and laggy. Here are my specs
Macbook Pro 15 inch
Intel core duo 2.16
2Gb of ram
100gb 7200rpm Hardisk
Final cut pro 5.1

Eather i really undrestemated the performance of this computer in Hd editing or im using heavaly encoded clips that are much more proccesore intensive than the ones i will be importing from a camera.

I tried both the 1080p one and the 720p one and both performed the same.
Can somone who has eddited or seen a macbook pro or a powermac dual 2 edit Hd clips download these and see if its lagy and studery for them to. I would really apreshiate t because i wont buy an HD camera if this is the way i will have to edit.

I'm downloading the file right now... I'll tell you what I see.

Runs smooth on my macbook pro. I have the 2.33ghz, 256 ATI, 120gig 5400 RPM.

I just grabbed the 1080p and 720p versions.

Both ran excellent on my MBP. When I was jumping around in Quicktime on the 720p version I was getting about a half second delay when skipping. When doing the same thing on the 1080p file, I got almost a second. The 1080p version was being 'shrunk' to fit on my MBP screen. Otherwise, both videos played very smooth. And I want that camera!

viewing the 1080 version using QT under FF was kinda choppy... made me feel dizzy. maybe i'll try opening the clip again w/ FCP.

Did you check activity monitor to see if there is a background application sapping up your processor time?

Firefox for instance can gradually grow in memory footprint and at some point even use up 95% of my processor!

when the clip was being d/l, FF was okay since fans didn't spin up. when the mov was playing; however, cpu usage was between 60 - 78% (both core 1&2).

In activity monitor you can see a list of running processes on your system, when you sort them you will be able to see the culprit that is using up all your CPU cycles

right, and when FF uses > 90% cpu in activity monitor, fans spin up on my MBP.

Yeah, something's definitely hogging CPU time if that doesn't play properly for you. It runs full speed on my MacBook (non-pro) at fullscreen, windowed, and actual size (when it doesn't even fit on the screen)

I also think your MBP is underperforming... the 1080p movie ran smoothly for me, and jumping around took about 1/2 a second.

Thanks all of you for looking but are you opening these videos in final cut pro and viewing them in the time line. Becausee when i play this film in qucktime i dont have a problem at all. Also remeber im not watching it in the browser i am rightcliking and downloading the file.
So just recap when i open the 1080p and 720p file in quicktime it works fine. However when i open the same file in final cut pro it lags horribly in the time line

So who has tried it in the timeline in final cut pro

i conveted the file to an avi and it plyed much smoother in final cut pro witch has led me to believe that it must be a compreshon problem with the video. Also once renderd it played fie as well.

Make sure you have the universal version. I had 5.0 installed, and I couldnt get it to run properly let alone even install motion.

I tried a render which fixed the sluggishness as you mentioned. Ran fine from there.
