Yesterday, I traded my 2019 16" MBP (8-core, 32GB, 1 TB) for a 2020 M1 MBP (16GB, 1TB). It was via a local reseller. It was essentially an even swap. Back-story: The 2019 16" that I had was a long journey for me... it had a logic-board replacement, and as of yesterday would still crash Adobe apps like crazy. This smaller, faster M1 is quieter, cooler, and lighter in my pack. I also own a Mac Pro 7,1 (16-core) for the heavy video projects I do.

I totally would have done the same in your shoes. Sounds like you got a lemon 16", but you're definitely in a much better position now. You are going to be impressed with the M1. I love mine to death.

like for example... right now just sitting here in this chair... I was so used to having my legs burning. I tried reselling the 16" first, but it simply would not sell. I kept lowering the price.. it was down to like $2100 with no interest. I think everyone knows...

I bought one of the earlier 13" MacBook Pros with retina display back in the day--I think it was around 2014 or so. I had decided the iPad Air was just not doing enough for me. I loved the MBP as long as it was sitting on my desk or table. But if I tried to use it in bed like I used to use my iPad, I would start sweating within minutes, especially in the summer where it's already so hot and humid where I live. Even if I ONLY opened Safari with ONE tab playing Netflix, the fans would spin up, the heat would get unbearable, and I'd eventually turn it off and put it away. Within months, I had it on eBay and was putting an order in for the 9.7" iPad Pro. Now that heat, fan noise, weight, and power aren't issues on the Macs anymore, I'm back on an M1 MBA, and I am LOVING it.

How do you like it? Is the smaller screen an issue? I have been waiting for 16'' M1x MBP but I'm desperate for a new computer. I'm thinking to buy something and sell it when the new 16'' MBP is out.

Well, my style of work has changed since I also have a 7,1 Mac Pro. When I am in transit, I welcome this smaller size to be efficient and get things done fast, but not lugging around all the weight of the 16". Also, If I really need to, I can connect my iPad Pro for more screen space. The battery life is crazy so far compared to the 16" It's like I have more than double the battery. I also like that it requires a lower wattage battery brick. So far I have not missed the larger screen.

I’d keep the 16” just for boot camp, you forget that when Apple locks down and limits its OS X more and more and more, eventually there will be software you cannot use that windows will come into.

plus gaming on the 16” is light years beyond the m1.

m1 has 2+ years to go and needs a lot of improvements before it’s a replacement for intel.

I don't get this notion that Apple locked down M1 Macs or macOS. I can still bypass Gatekeeper on M1 and install apps from anywhere. Dual boot macOS is still there. I can downgrade to older versions of macOS that are not signed anymore, something that is not possible on iPhones and iPads. I can disable SIP and I can unlock the boot loader. All this is possible on M1 Macs.

When Apple locks down macOS is when apple removes even one those things I mentioned above.
If apple wanted to lock down the Mac, M1 Macs would have been perfect time for Apple do that.

I like using Boot Camp, but not on a laptop. I have Windows 10 on my Mac Pro 7,1 for gaming (really the only reason why I use it). My Mac Pro with the 6900 XT is ridiculous for gaming w/ Boot Camp. I like this smaller m1 MacBook Pro... I love how portable, cool and the battery is ridiculous.

IMHO if one needs a Windows system one should buy a windows system instead of a Mac. The experience will be better on something designed to run windows. And if gaming is important get a nice Windows desktop system with Nvidia or AMD cards, gaming keyboard, and a big external monitor.

I ended up selling my 16" to a reseller back in January or so. I got around $1500 for it. Looks like the price at this same reseller is down under $1300 now. So you are correct. Everyone knows Intel MBPs are last generation tech.

I already got my Air and so far good, I have only managed to hit 75% of the memory used, using HANA Studio, Edge, Safari, Excel with a big file, Twitter, Youtube and some more other stuff.

Definitely a great purchase.

And what if you also want to run MacOS and don't want or don't have room for a separate PC for running Windows apps.

Is Windows 365 an option for you? Runs in your Mac's browser and provides full Windows PC running in Microsoft's Azure cloud. Also, lets you get your Windows PC on a tablet, Linux devices, etc. Your files are in the cloud so accessible from anywhere. Perfect for people working part-time in the office and part-time at home.

I agree. I’m no MS fan in general, and I hate the way they design software, but as far as access for work, I can get to everything from everywhere seamlessly.

I do kind of wish OneDrive worked more like iCloud for Mac though. I find it confusing and weird as far as navigation. iCloud on my Mac feels more like just my normal file system. I don’t even really think about the fact that it’s in iCloud anymore.

OneDrive is a separate solution from Windows 365. On Windows 365 you are running on the cloud already, so the drive is "local" which is on an MS server.

I am not a fan of OneDrive and any of the syncing of local file systems. If I need to share files I just Google Drive and move things there myself. Locally I backup to my NAS which in turn is automatically backed up off-site with AWS Glacier.
