He might be right about the socks thing, but as far as "i" goes, no, Apple does not own that.
In fact, Apple was years late using it for iMac in 1998. "i" names started picking up speed during the 1990s as "internet" and "interactive" became the buzzwords of the decade. Apple was also late dropping it. "i" names mostly fell out of favor after the turn of the century.
This comes up about every six months, and I get to post my (incomplete) list of "i" names that I found over a couple of hours of searching the US Trademark Office. From the timeline, you can easily see that Apple was a latecomer to using "i".
