I used to know what I was doing... (How-to make photos pop-up in the screen)

So I used to know how to do HTML coding and make websites... then I stopped and now I'm way out of the loop. I have noticed a lot of websites that feature photos do so by having the image pop-up within the screen, not a new window. Apple does this on their website too. I have provided an example:

Is there a simple way to do this? Would I have to use something like Dreamweaver (I welcome other suggestions) or is there like a "script" or piece of code to do it easily?

There's various scripts that have been developed for doing this. Various ones have varying effects applied. Lightbox was one of the first. There's also LightView. Here's wikipedia page with some links. I even have my own light weight and easy to apply version that I developed.

definately the way forward here is alink to a matrix which shows most of them and their limitations/uses
