I'm calling the cops
Pretty much I have offerd to update the look and function of this website:

San Clemente Ocean Fest

I have been asked to "make it look more current century" and make it easier to use.

Essentially, I have to make it look better, keep it simple, and it has to look family friendly.



Now since I have basic knowledge of HTML and FTP((here is a forum I am working on for my school), I figured that iWeb would be appropriate to use. Yet I don't want to make it TOO obvious I used it.

I am very experienced in photoshop/illustrator so that shouldn't be a problem.


I just need some advice on what I'm getting myself into.

I has to be done a little bit before July 19th and I was wondering weather that is more then enough time or not at all.

I;m 16 so I have school but what do you all think?

for me, you've pretty much mentioned the basics you need to re-build a site - html / photoshop skills / ftp knowledge ... how do you fair in css?

take one step at a time, just do the interface design first, then cut it up.

and you have plenty of time.
 
I would say if you're comfortable with CSS then I would rely heavily on that to give it more of a web 2.0 feel
 
Well I'm new to the web and am currently in school for graphic/web design. If I was able to create a site in 2 weeks then you certainly can! Like some of the replies, CSS can help greatly but it seems as you know the basics. Good luck!
 
Try to avoid iWeb if possible. Anyone that has ever used it will know that you used a template.

If you can, take some time and learn CSS. It's not that hard except for fixing Internet Explorer 6's bugs, which a Google search can help you with.

Visit your local library™ and get a book on CSS. (They're located under 005.72)

Photoshop is great for graphics. Combine that with HTML, CSS, and some design skill and you've got an amazing website.
 
Use CSS and Xhtml can you make one great looking site
and graphics is have the battle with web site design

So there is no possible way to manipulate iWeb and replace most templates with photoshop made graphics?

I know a "little" CSS. I could learn more.

If you want be a web designer these days, knowing css is a must. It doesn't take long to learn, and the end result will be alot easier to edit later on.
 
I'm only 16, I'm not looking to get into web design;) This is a mere side project.

I mean they're not really asking more much. If it were to look iWeb like it would be ok. I just don't want to make it seem like I didn't try.

I guess I am still just looking to see if iWeb is an absolute no no.

I can set up a basic site for this year and improve it for next year.
 
The issue is if you create a web-site in iWeb, your stuck with using iWeb for the lifetime of the site as the code it produces is unmanageable.

If your simply reproducing the old web site, but with a cleaner look you can do it :D

Just remember if this is your first major project that re-use is key, you only need certain things (like CSS styles) once, then simply re-use them.

Now I have no photoshop/design skills at all but I tried to make my own site in iWeb and not make look like it was. It took ages trying to hide some of the template parts but I think...maybe...I have Managed it. just play with images in iWeb and see what you can get.

A good tool to have for css (and you'll have it if you participated in MacHeist last year) is CCSEdit. A very good software that takes a lot of the coding out of css and gives you a gui to play around with.

You could always try it in iWeb, but I've heard said it's not exactly flexible; have you looked at rapidweaver yet ?

Both extremely good applications,

I use CSSEdit to edit CSS and its great. Although it does have a GUI you still have to know what your doing, but does give you complete control over your site.

Rapidweaver is a better version of iWeb and has (many) templates that you can produce a website with.

I don't know because I have never looked, but I imagine the code it produces is better than iWeb.

I did actually get both apps through Macheist. I'm leaning more towards Rapidweaver I think.
 
Actually CSSEdit does exactly what it says : it edits css files. You still need to write the html files using one tool or the other.

Rapidweaver allows you to write those html files, and puts more distance between you and the css files, they are hidden in the theme files, and you only edit certain parts of the css files via the Rapidweaver settings for that theme.

If you know what you are doing you can actually edit css files inside the theme file (using CSSEdit for example). So far, I haven't tried that :p
