i want an iphone, but people have been saying there is no video recording, and you can't have any music ringtones, if this is true... is it that big of a deal... because people are sure making it out to be that... also...
Some critics (including myself before I got an iPhone) are making the lack of video out to be a big deal. But I kept thinking about it, and you know, I had phones with video recording capability, and I never used it for anything beyond just trying it out. I was never really happy with the video quality of most cell phone cameras anyway.
So i guess it all depends. Have you recorded video with your cell phone? If so, and you can't do without it, then the iPhone is probably not a good buy. But if you've never bothered to record video, then it's not a deal breaker.
do you absolutely need a wi-fi connection in your home, or a wi-fi connection in general to go on the internet at all?
No, you don't need WiFi, though it is recommended. In the absence of WiFi, the iPhone will use the AT&T network to go on the web (their data network is called EDGE). It works well, but there are two drawbacks to this:
1. An EDGE connection is slower than WiFi (but usually equal to or faster than dialup).
2. You cannot use EDGE and make a phone call at the same time; it's one or the other. This means that won't be able to surf the web while in the middle of a phone call, unlike when using a WiFi connection. Also, there might be instances where, if your phone is busy downloading something, an incoming call will get sent straight to voicemail.
Do you have a DSL or Cable connection? If so, a WiFi router can be had for as little as $30 these days. You do not need to buy the really expensive Apple Airport base station. Any old WiFi router should do.
