sorry... if this is in the wrong forum

i just want to ask a few questions..

i want an iphone, but people have been saying there is no video recording, and you can't have any music ringtones, if this is true... is it that big of a deal... because people are sure making it out to be that... also...

do you absolutely need a wi-fi connection in your home, or a wi-fi connection in general to go on the internet at all?

thanks :)

Some critics (including myself before I got an iPhone) are making the lack of video out to be a big deal. But I kept thinking about it, and you know, I had phones with video recording capability, and I never used it for anything beyond just trying it out. I was never really happy with the video quality of most cell phone cameras anyway.

So i guess it all depends. Have you recorded video with your cell phone? If so, and you can't do without it, then the iPhone is probably not a good buy. But if you've never bothered to record video, then it's not a deal breaker.

No, you don't need WiFi, though it is recommended. In the absence of WiFi, the iPhone will use the AT&T network to go on the web (their data network is called EDGE). It works well, but there are two drawbacks to this:

1. An EDGE connection is slower than WiFi (but usually equal to or faster than dialup).

2. You cannot use EDGE and make a phone call at the same time; it's one or the other. This means that won't be able to surf the web while in the middle of a phone call, unlike when using a WiFi connection. Also, there might be instances where, if your phone is busy downloading something, an incoming call will get sent straight to voicemail.

Do you have a DSL or Cable connection? If so, a WiFi router can be had for as little as $30 these days. You do not need to buy the really expensive Apple Airport base station. Any old WiFi router should do.

It depends on where you are using the phone. If you can get an AT&T signal at your location, you can get online with the phone. iPhone by default uses Edge, which is AT&T's wireless data network. I have no wi-fi at all at home but I get a great AT&T signal, so I haven't bothered to install a wireless network. My iPhone can access Edge from anywhere in the house.

At work, AT&T is very spotty on my side of the building and it's much easier to use wi-fi.

well... yeah, i did do video recording, but i guess its not that big of a deal... do you think they can make an update that enables video recording in the future or... is that a hardware thing?

i do have a cable modem... i never really went wireless because i heard it was insecure so i never really got into it.

It's hard to tell, really. Clearly the iPhone has the ability to decode video streams via the YouTube app, and in most mobile devices that often means that there's also an encoder somewhere, too. But it's unclear whether the "stuff" really exists in the hardware to make it possible via software, or whether that encoder is set up in such a way that it and the camera can really "talk" to each other.

Wireless is insecure if you just plug the router in and leave it open for anyone to access. Most current model routers have what's called WPA, which is a reasonable strong pass-word based encryption. If you get a router that has this, you're okay. Just set a password, and when you connect to it, the iPhone will ask you to enter the password. Then it'll join up and you're all set.

The strength and security of a WPA network depends on how long the password is, so long passwords are recommended. "Password" would be easily hackable, while "thisissoclassyswifiaccesspoint87154872865417614651asdlkfjsdalkfiew" will be much harder to crack. Don't worry, the iPhone remembers the password once you've entered it. :)

thank you so much.

i think i've been sold
i'm going to buy two iphones today :D

do you know if it's the same as any other cellphone contract, you have 15 days if you don't like it, and you can return it?

Glad I could be of service in helping you part with at least $1,000 :D

It's MOSTLY the same. You have 14 days to return an iPhone if you don't like it. I say "mostly" because Apple treats their iPhone returns the same as all their other products, and imposes a 15% restocking fee if the package is opened.

Here's what I recommend: use the display models for a good while, like, at least half an hour. Focus on navigation, and using the apps and widgets, and see if you like using the phone. Don't worry so much about the typing: the one thing that kept me from buying an iPhone was that I kept trying to type with my thumbs in the store and it just didn't work. But when I finally cracked and bought the phone, I was typing with my index finger by that afternoon, and faster than I ever did when thumb-typing on my old Palm Treo. the idea is that you kinda have to re-learn how to type, first with your index finger, and then you can slowly graduate to two-thumbs as you gain confidence with the interface.

If you like what you see, and you really are going to buy two, then buy one iPhone first and try it out. If after a day or two you're still loving it, then go ahead and buy the other.

i say two.. because my boyfriend will be extremely pissed if i bought one... he is dying for an iphone.. maybe it can be a little surprise for him.

thanks for all the info :)
