From what I can tell, you can only create widgets and shortcuts using the phone’s speech function for translations and you can only access the camera to translate via the Translate app’s menu.

I really just want to be able to quickly hold my phone up to a poster or whatever to quickly get a translation - like you see in all these commercials. This has to be capable of that by now, right?

You might talking about Live Text feature (https://support.apple.com/en-gb/guide/iphone/iphcf0b71b0e/18.0/ios/18.0).

Just open camera app, point at the text, wait until a symbol appears at the bottom right of the screen. Tap the symbol and you'll have a Translation option.
Thank you. I hate that Apple makes things confusing like this. The camera app should be for taking pictures, the translation app should be for translations - and it should be widget-able. Apple’s camera app is not my default camera (I changed it to Halide) so, apparently, to get a translation I need to have two camera apps. If Apple’s photos didn’t look like over-processed turds, this wouldn’t be an issue. 😩
