Um, OK. Would you also like some dessert with that?

Jobs' obsession is with thinness, not screen size, apparently, so unless I see an 11.6" Air, I don't believe that it is going to happen.

I don't see the point. I want it to be LIGHT, not small. 13 inch is as small as I would take a display. If Apple made a 15 inch Air at 2kg man I would be happy to get it at launch.

I'm looking at the other direction.

A 17 inch Macbook Air. That would be fantastic!

I believe it's just as likely we get a 15" MBA as an 11" MBA. The way I see it, the market demand is on a 13" MBA for $2k. If price goes to $1k, sure an 11" MBA makes sense as an iPad competitor... URGH, wait, there is no reason in the world to make a competitor to the iPad... NOPE, no 11" MBA... you will be waiting a lonnnggggg time.

However, the rest of us will have new 13" MBAs to play with and everyone that said it was EOL and the iPad was taking its place will look like SJ tools/fools.

Actually, the MBA was born and shaped in large part by Steve's obsession with a reasonably sized screen (13" in his opinion) and a reasonably sized keyboard. Those two factors are what differentiate the MBA from netbooks regarding the ultraportable market.

As somebody who bikes to school all the time with one in my backpack, I agree with him that weight is the critical factor, and not the dimensions being below those of the MBA. You need a bag for a netbook or MBA, and as the manilla envelope commercial pointed out, there isn't much that an MBA won't fit in.

I'm guessing that there will be a laptop update across the board in October. The desktops are not ready for an update yet, and Apple typically updates some of its macs in October. Also, iLife/iWork should be coming as well. I am really hoping for a redesigned Macbook Air. If it has the same design, I'm sticking with my 13" Macbook Pro. The line issue in the Rev B and C make the Macbook Air a no buy for me (and the Rev A has far too many other problems, although it had an amazing screen).

13" seems to be the new sweetspot for many, with the 15" loosing ground to it.

To get work done 13" is the minimal acceptable size for most people.

There may be an 11" MBA but they won't discontinue the 13" to make it, unless they're making huge changes (thin/light) to the 13" MBP at the same time.

yes 13'' is the minimal acceptable size for most people but then again since when "acceptable" and "Air " are on the same sentence? it's all about being ultraportable, not happy with that? get a Pro.

Yes but then again, people who can afford the MBA most likely want to get work done with it, and I don't know about you, but if I'm going to spend more than $2k on a computer I want it to at least be able to perform SOME jobs, which, in the way you are saying it, the Air won't be able to do because it should be ultra portable BEFORE having decent performance.

If you only care about portability, get a Netbook or an iPad and be happy with it.

I agree that Apple is unlikely to release an 11 inch MBA. I just hope (1) that there is an updated 13 inch MBA and (2) that its improvements are dramatic, rather than just incremental.

I agree with this post.

I would rather not have an 11.6" MBA. I thought I wanted one, but then just thinking about how ridiculous that would look - that is a turn off. The 13" screen is the perfect size for document writing etc on the go.

I would love to see a bump in the resolution of the macbook air..but for some reason apple likes to shy away from that. Don't really need more ports, but a bump in speed and ram would be nice.

Yes. RAM is the key, it has to support 4GB minimum as well as using newer processor and graphics card. 13 inch is the smallest screen size of use for getting any real work done(resolution bump would be nice though). I don't see a smaller version coming.

RAM is, indeed, the key. I am hoping against hope that Apple will redesign the MBA in a way that allows the inclusion of slots for RAM modules. That way, it could be upgraded to 8Gb of RAM. I fear that 4Gb of RAM might still be inadequate for my purposes, which include running VMware Fusion in Unity mode so that I can run Windows apps from the OS X dock.

No way. *13" MBA priced at $2K is a loser in a broad marketplace. *Most people have no desire to play $2K+ for a computer that gets obsolete in 6 months.

Like 'beauty', I think 'obsolete' is in the eye (mind) of the beholder (user). My Rev. A. MBA is still very useful for me even though it may be considered*'obsolete' by most'.

Yes, I would be delighted to have a faster CPU /GPU but that is not essential to me. The productivity and satisfaction of using a computer can be improved by both an increase in the system's speed and the portability of the device. In my experience, the portability of my MBA makes it a far more productive (and enjoyable) device since I bring it places (throw it in my book-bag, put it under the car sear, etc) I wouldn't consider bringing a bigger (yet faster) laptop. A faster laptop doesn't doesn't make you more productive if you don't have it with you.

Additionally, I'm not afraid of paying $2k (or more) for a new MBA. I would be very pleased if $2k bought me a 256M SSD, 4M or even 8M of RAM, a higher resolution IPS display, etc. I want Apple to use components that cost more because they are smaller and lighter than mainstream components. I am willing to pay more than most people would. I just hope that there are other users out there like me (and that Apple still sees this as a profitable market).*

That is exactly correct. SJ's really said that Apple didn't want to take away from the user experience, so they had beautiful 13" LED-backlit displays and FULL-SIZED keyboards.

However, if failed to tell us, with the original MBA, that it was a POS and was worthless. Redeemed Apple with the v 2,1 MBA which absolutely has dominated the ultraportable market, NOT IN SALES, but in high quality and performance.

I say 13" MBA it is... otherwise, it takes away from the user experience... Apple, more importantly, SJ's wants to clearly identify and target market segments. There is no need for an 11" MBA that reduces the user experience when that market segment is already being serviced by the $499 iPad. Don't get me wrong, if SJ could sell 3m 11" MBAs per month at $1299, I am sure he would go for it.

The bottom line is Apple understands its market better than we do. We're a small segment of a currently niche market. Apple can expand the market, but to do that it has to cut costs. And to do that means competition for the iPad. Apple makes a ton of money on media sales to iPad users probably for the life of that product. That is a better deal than a one time sale of an MBA.

11" MBA is less marketable than a 15" MBA in a +$1499 price range...

I, too, would be willing to pay what it took for a redesigned MBA that had enough processing power, good enough graphics, and most of all the capability to hold enough RAM, to satisfy my needs. Do I really believe that Apple will offer such an MBA at any price? Sadly, I do not. Still, a guy can dream, can't he?:)

Well, the way I see it is this: Apple could get Sandy Bridge earlier than others. Why? It would make sense for Intel - sell a boatload of those to a single company; just put it in every Macbook and you have big enough demand, but not impossible to satisfy. I guess it'll take a while for Intel to rev up the production rate; So, just give it to Apple first.

If the above is a pixie-dust induced pipe dream (probably is) and SB won't show up until early 2011, which means we'll be getting it somewhere in March perhaps, then why not make a refresh? Some keep on saying... Wait for SB, wait for SB; but let's face it; it won't be available January 1st; Maybe February, maybe later; Its an awful lot of time.

Let's be conservative - from now to March its 6 freaking months; update it now, update it later.

I think Apple could roll out Liquid Metal based laptops any day really. Sure, they just licensed the tech, but LM folks were making prototypes for Apple like forever to try to interest them; I'm sure they have a bunch of viable designs.

So keep the C2D, add 400M series Nvidia equivalent of 9400M, do the new case design and you have 6 months of good sales; then update to SB and you'll have even better sales.

(SB will support ExpressCard 2; if Apple wasn't run by fascists and EC2 made it to a laptop like Air, it would be HUGE; I'm talking HUGE; like external USB3.0 hub with full USB3.0 speed or incredibly fast eSATA or external GPU; but hey, that's another pipe dream)

It is shocking for me to hear my version of the MBA being refered to as a 'POS'. That is good, though, I guess, since then I ought to be really pleased when I purchase my new one when Sandy Bridge is finally released. :)
