iPad mini I want the iPad Mini XR

I want the new iPad Mini to take on the shape of the iPhone XR. Multiple colors, edge to edge LCD display with face ID. Great internals, 4GB of RAM (at least). Box form factor like the iPad 2018 models. USB-C and all those colors.


Thing would sell like hotcakes. That's all I want, dammit. It'll never get made but a boy can dream.
 
iPad mini pro please! :) just add the support of Apple Pencil, also upgrade those internals. I like bezels actually, with bigger displays, you need a place to hold the device.

The bezels on the 10.5 aren’t bothersome to me unlike the bigger ones on the cheaper models. Those drove me nuts as well as on the older iPhones. The bezels on the 10.5 are barely bigger than the bezels on the new iPad Pros.
 
That would be fantastic – I'd seriously consider it even after saving up for the new Pro. The iPad mini 4 (I'm not selling mine) is the closest thing to a PADD there's been, and a Pro-form iPad mini would be even closer.

what is a PADD? Yes, I really think they might bring the pencil support to the mini, i mean they brought it to the regular ipad 2018 so it only makes sense to do it across the ipad lineup.
 
If I did not buy two Mini 4s, I would continue to hope for a cutting edge iPad Mini Pro - A12, 4-6GB RAM, pencil, laminated HD screen 401 ppi. Apple treat this product like the Mac Mini so f* Apple! It could be a few more years down the road or never! Plus, if Apple make a budget version, I just laugh at Apple since most Mini buyers have the money to buy the Mac Pro on impulse!

Do we think the iPad update coming in March for the mini and maybe iPad 2019 will have usb-c? Can’t decide if that’s a pro ‘thing’ or if they really will be moving to usb-c.

If they add usb-c to the phones in September, it will be disappointing if it isn’t added to the mini when it could take another 4 years for a new mini :(
 
I don't think it's even conceivable for Apple to produce an iPad that is as durable as the XR chassis. Imagine the selling price.
 
I'm not interested in a mini based tablet at this time, and I think for the vast majority they don't either. I mean if the mini was selling like hotcakes, don't you think apple would be updating and refreshing that line?

People kept harping on apple and complaining on apple for killing the 17" MBP, same exact reason imo, not enough people were buying them, apple was not making a profit (or enough of a profit) on them to justify their existence.

Laptops are designed with portability and use on the go in mind. A 17” machine is the opposite of that and thus not a good mobile computing solution for the masses. Tablets are mobile devices, and the Mini is really really good at being used on the go or just casually around the house. I believe there is sufficient demand to warrant an update, and a full-screen version at about 8.5” would be the perfect iPad for me.

I think the poster that you quoted gave a solid example, that if the mini was still extremely popular, don’t you think Apple would be responsive to keeping this product alive? And how many years now has it been since they haven’t even updated it? Similarly like the iPod that is a dead, stagnant product as well.

Another example would be the iPhone SE, a popular phone for it’s tenure, but clearly wasn’t making enough money for Apple, because if it was, they would still have in their lineup or at least have it refreshed.

Point is, Apple is interested in manufacturing products that make them money, the iPhone SE, the iPod, iPad Mini are not products that are in Apples vision for the foreseeable future, because if they were, something would have happened by now.

Wouldn't surprise me if Apple eventually uses the 10.5" form factor for the budget iPads down the line. Maybe after the bezel-less iPad Pros have been on the market a few years.

I’m going with Ming on this one, we’ll see a Mini 5. Problem is if he’s right it’ll return to the Mini 3 unlaminated screen form factor to hit a lower price point, which admittedly makes sense for Apple, but after rocking a Mini 4 for three years I have absolutely no interest in that. To the OP’s question, heck yes I want a Mini XR, but I’m not counting on it. Oh well, my guess is by 2020 the base iPad gets a smaller footprint via reduced bezels so I’d be ok with that. I’m certainly not following “Apple’s vision” and buying a $1000 Pro with keyboard and pencil just to read digital magazines on the crapper.

I don’t think Ming said anything about unlaminated display, just that it would be a cheaper panel (he was guessing). That can mean many things.

True, but my interpretation is that they'll go unlaminated just like they did with the base 9.7" iPad. We'll see. He's always guessing.

I really dislike this approach with budget iPads with unlaminated displays. It's such a big step backwards. I hope this only gets applied to the current 2018 9.7".

I love the display on the Mini 4. Keep that, update the internals and add pencil support, I’d probably buy one. Bump it up to 3gb of Ram, and yes please.

I own a 2018 iPad, it is fine for general use. I got used to reading and drawing on the non-laminated screen rather quickly. I dislike the low memory (Procreate trips up sometimes), and the pencil has a little lag, but it’s decent.
That said, I’d like Apple to treat the mini with respect again.
