Ok, so long story short, I'm running low on disk space on my MB. My iTunes library is partially at fault.

Anyway, I need to install Windows, but I don't want to compromise my Mac OS space. So, here's what I want to do.

I want to have 10 GB free on my Mac OS partition,
The smallest possible partition for Win XP Home,
And a FAT 32 partition to store all my files and Win XP apps.

I was think that making a bootcamp partition would work. Then split and format with disk utility.

How should I do this?

Hei Tsice,

I'm currently looking to do something similar on my imac:

100GB MacOS
100GB Windows XP
300GB FAT Shared Data drive

This forum post describes exactly that:

They use boot camp to install windows, edit the boot.ini file then use Disk utility to partition the MacOS portion to create the Shared FAT partition.

Is there any reason why this shouldn't work? Sounds fairly straightforward to me.

neil,

any drive formatted as a FAT drive should be instantly mountable by both operating systems (in this case xp/vista and osx), so that should eliminate that problem.

formatting is very straightforward.

i would use the leopard/tiger installer disk to completely format your hard drive (after backing up of course) then formatting and partitioning everything as you see fit. format the OSX partition as you please, and the windows partition as "unallocated space". this will allow you to format it correctly when you install xp/vista onto the computer.

the shared FAT drive can be formatted under disk utility using the leopard disk, infact i would recommend doing it using disk utility as windows gives you a 32gb(i think) formatting limit. using disk utility there is no formatting limit.

hope i make sense.
