iOS I want to be an iphone programmer.

Hello forum, I posting here in hopes to make some friends in the community of iphone programming. I'm quite new to the programming world but have recently began studying java in order to start learning. At the moment I am teaching myself through a book I bought in combination with youtube tutorials. Basicly my motivation is to be able to make some cool iphone apps using my imagination. I don't have an intel based mac yet so I cant yet officialy make anything for apple yet anyway although I did read about some workarounds that let you program stuff for JB iphones. Never the less , I'm here looking for some advice. If someone knows like a must have book, or a good set of instructional videos that they reccomend would be great, or if some one knows some good exercises of the basics that they could fill me in on would be appreciated.

I have heard good things about the Stanford classes in Itunes U. I also had the Iphone Apps for Dummies book recommended to me. As I don't have an intel mac yet I haven't watched or read either. Sorry.

If you want to program for the iPhone, Java is the wrong way to go. You want Objective-C. That's the language used for programming Cocoa applications on both Macs and the iPhone.

o rly? ok thats good to know. But I did hear somewhere that Java is very similar to the xcode or whatever its called. Is obj-c easier or harder to pick up on than java?

If it is what I think, how to learn to program, we can spend the next couple of minutes getting the concepts you need down so that you can find sources for information that will teach you what you need to know before you start Xcode for the iPhone.

I am an old assembly language programmer who six weeks ago had never written Objective C code before in my life. I just finished my first iPhone app and am testing it for distribution now. Programming is programming is programming, its just what different compilers and interpreters like to see and what they don't.

You might want to start by checking out the stickies and guides at the top of this very forum. They might seem a bit daunting at first but there is lots of information in those.

You were talking about a must-have book. I would recommend "Programming in Objective-C 2.0" by Stephen G. Kochan. I wouldn't buy this if you don't already have some programming experience, but as long as you have some minimal knowledge of programming, then you should be fine. Tie this book in with other online tutorials and the Apple iPhone Reference Library documentation and you'll learn everything you need to know.
