The startup sound on my 2016 12" MacBook is so annoying. I need this to end and hope that I'll find help here.

I am not able to mute it with the Terminal and these commands that you can find online:

sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%80
sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%01
sudo nvram SystemAudioVolume=%00

I had an iMac before I went for the MacBook and the commands didn't work with this machine, too. But I was able to use the small program "Auto Mute" ( https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/35207/auto-mute ) but it seems as if this doesn't work with Sierra anymore.

I also downloaded a script that should mute the startup sound, which worked fine for a few weeks but now that I am using Bluetooth Speakers instead of the built-in speakers the startup sound is back again to annoy the crap out of me.

Any suggestions?

Just curious why restarting often enough for it to be annoying? I restart maybe once a month usually.

I like to save power. I know that the power consumption in sleep mode is not much, but I still find it pointless not to turn the MacBook off when I don't use it for the next 18 hours (sleep, work).

But maybe that's just me because I'm still used to a desktop computer.

Power usage especially on the 12" should be virtually nothing when in sleep ( 0.3W according to apple ), so honestly, I'd probably just use sleep and not worry about it!

( and after 3 hours of sleep, they should enter hibernation to use effectively as much power as when turned off anyway )

Since the startup sound is linked to the System volume the only way i could archive this is first, in OS X "muting" the speaker, then restarting Mac.

So for the time being which is more annoying, the sound or the power being used while the computer is asleep?

If you can't have your cake and eat it too then best to choose the lesser of the two evils or get another machine.

Excerpt from http://all-about-apple.com/restore-2016-macbook-pro-startup-chime/

The bold text is me not the website.

Just something for you to try. Instead of using that older command. Uncertain if it helps with your specific MacBook(the website title gives some of it away); simply giving out options.

Currently I use Cocktail(registered) to remove the chime on boot. It doesn't always stick. In some situations Cocktail can't hook in to the OS fast enough(my guess) to do it's trickery before rebooting.

Open up Terminal on your Mac (search for it if you dont find it).

Type this in the Terminal to enable the boot chime.
sudo nvram BootAudio=%01

Type this in the Terminal to disable the boot chime.
sudo nvram BootAudio=%00

You have to enter your system password when you do this.

You should be able to do it without any jiggery pokery, at least on a Mac Pro. Mine is very quiet.
I can't remember how but it’s a combination of what you set for, Play sound effects through, Alert volume, and what you choose for output device.
