I am planning on purchasing AppleTV tomorrow or next week, i heard the newest ATV has 8GB Flash memory, how many movies can the AppleTV hold if downloaded?

Im seriously confused with the AppleTV. Does it store my movies 'ONLINE' so that i need a valid internet connection JUST to watch what i've already downloaded or is it stored in the 8GB memory?? I am planning to download from both my Macbook Pro and from the AppleTV set box, can i access them from both places?

Im just afraid it could either store a maximum 2 HD movies or that i need a constant valid internet connection to watch downloaded materials..?

Correct. the 8 MB of flash memory on both the atv 2 and atv3 can not be used for any media storage. Period.

Atv 1 is the only atv that can use its internal hdd for actual media storage. the other two stream and stream only.

im not sure where the purchased movies go im assuming it triggers your computers iTunes acount to download them on your computers hard drive

So this $99 Atv 3 is pretty much a 'medium' to 'stream' downloaded iTunes movies on my HDTV.. Will this be prone to 'lags' or 'buffering'?? Even the fastest of 'home' internet can still buffer video times on youtube..

I have had maybe 1 or 2 stutters since it's release. My internet speed is 11Mbps download. And I have a dual band "n" Time Capsule in the next room. So it's been extremely solid for me. Your mileage may vary depending your situation, though.

So before i end up buying it tomorrow:

A) I can buy (not rent) and download through my appleTV (via wifi and TV screen) and my MBP, and watch it anywhere, including my appleTV, iPad etc?

B) My purchased content via Atv and/or iTunes macbook will be in my iTunes account so i can download later and store in my HDD from iTunes in my MBP?

C) Can i watch 'rented' movies anywhere or just on my appleTV (if i rent from there) or my MBP (if i rent via iTunes in my MBP)?

If you're streaming from your iTunes library, you probably won't ever notice any lag unless you immediately try fast forwarding the second the movie starts to load. I have a 1st Gen tv, don't have anything stored locally and just stream from my iMac. Even when I go into Movie Trailers and watch something, there is never any lag and I have a basic 3 MBPS connection from U-Verse.

Yes to all as long as you use the same Apple ID.

A) you can buy on your apple tv & watch on apple tv. it will also download on itunes so you can watch on ipad, iphone, airplay etc

B) purchased content will be on iCloud. it will be pushed to your apple tv ala your photo stream pushed to your pc.
no 'saving'....you just push what movie you want to watch ala netflix and it streams. of course, the movies will be what you have already purchased/activated via itunes.

C) yes. see answer A.

Your entire iTunes library will be available on your aTV, providing that
1. Your computer is on and iTunes is running.
2. Your aTV and the computer running iTunes are on the same network.
3. iTunes and the aTV are both logged into the same apple ID.
4. the content is in a compatible format for the aTV. (iTunes should yell at you if it isn't)

if you purchase something on the aTV, it will be downloaded there, and stay in memory until the aTV needs the memory for something else. so if you purchase a movie, you should be able to watch it without any buffering untill you purchase another.

you can re-download iTunes purchases now. so once you've bought something, it should show up anywhere you can access the iTunes store from (iTunes, aTV, iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch), you will have to re-download, but it's there to grab freely.
you can also set up iTunes to "automatically download all purchases" so if you buy something on the aTV, and iTunes is running, it will automatically be downloaded to your computer.

Oh, so i HAVE to have my MBP ON and running iTunes for it to work? Even if i enable iCloud, but my macbook is off, i cannot stream videos?

So lets say i took my mac off to work or study, my parents at home are unable to watch movies on my apple TV (Lets say they DONT have a computer at home - Kinda true - dad doesn't use home computer for work and mum, well she doesn't know how to use a comp.)

if it was purchased from iTunes, it will be available to re-download (stream) from Apple without the computer being on.

Well not technically. If your ATV2 is jailbroken you can indeed store media on the internal memory (8GB): just not very much, obviously. I have had one movie stored on one of my ATV2s for over a year (because I copied it there when I was testing and then forgot about it). XBMC can play files stored on the internal memory with no problems at all.

Furthermore, you do not need "internet" access to stream from local iTunes, merely some sort of home network (wifi or ethernet).

Clearly to all practical intents and purposes at ATV2 is a streaming device, but I'm just pointing out that "can not be used for any media storage. Period." is not true.

One thing to point out that I had to "learn" after the first time I did it, is that any movie you rent on the ATV can only be watched on the ATV. If you want to be able to watch the rental on either the MacBook or the ATV the movie has to be rented on the MacBook and then can be watched on the MB or streamed to the ATV.
