I want to buy a 3G iPhone off of ebay or Craigslist to unlock so that it works with my carrier (t-mobile) but I am confused. Before anyone flames me, I did search the forums and did look it up on google but it's too confusing for me. I did find this that looks quite useful but I don't have "an old SIM card." Just the t-mobile one. Also, what is Pwnage and quickpwn and all that? Please help me.

once you JailBreak & Unlock it you can use the TMob SIM Card in the iPhone. The difference between QuickPwn & WinPwn is like Coke & Pepsi your choice, but I suggest QuickPwn.

Terrible explainaion.

WinPwn is for Windows users.
QuickPWN is for Windows or Mac users.
Pwnage Tool is for Mac only.

QuickPWN is the best choice. You may only Jailbreak the iPhone 3G with QuickPWN. You will need to use QuickPWN to Jailbreak your phone and then use Cydia to Unlock it.

Awesome... :) My mind is slow but I'm figuring it out. now I'm wondering; it wants me to have a SIM card in it already to unlock it for use with any SIM card carrier. I only have my t-mobile SIM though so how would I work around that? Could I use my brother's girl friend's card? (She has an iphone+AT&T...) Would I mess up any of her data?

You don't need another SIM card to use QuickPWN. Take yours out before QuickPWNing and keep it out until after Yellowsn0w.

Before you buy the phone you should make sure it hasn't been updated to 2.2.1 and don't use Quickpwn. Updating with Quickpwn will lock you out of a 3g soft unlock. Go and read the Dev-Team blog a couple times to get used to what you will need to do. If the phone has the wrong modem firmware you will be out of luck. And the modem firmware can't be downgraded. So take a look here...

Don't use Quickpwn? I thought Quickpwn was the program that was recommended.

QuickPWN is for the iPhone 2g Unlock...But with the 3g you need to use Pwnage tool so the baseband doesn't get updated. Once that Baseband is updated to 02.30.03 you will not be able to use Yellowsn0w to do the soft unlock.

Pwnage is the answer for unlocking now because of the recent update from Apple which changes the baseband. Before this update Quickpwn was the easiest and most reliable way. Honestly, I never liked Pwnage that much because of failure rates due to all kinds of circumstances but we have no choice as of now. I don't even know if I am going to bother with 2.2.1

Excellent... thank you guys. :):) I think I have it all in order, now I just need to save up money to actually buy the thing. Also, any more tips?
