i want to update my iphone 4, version 4.0, jailbreak, unlocked...some of my friends said that it can't be...it till be blocked. i'm confused and don't know what to do. most of the apps now are for higher version. please help. :(:(:(

You can use RedSnow (I think) to keep your current baseband when you upgrade using shsh blobs (also from redsnow) and then update using redsnow, and you should be able to re-unlock after you jailbreak. What did you plan on upgrading to? 5.1.1 or 6.0.2?

You need to do a restore. Unfortunately, the jailbreak will be limited; no (real) untethered, for one.

Until ios 6 gets an untethered JB, I'm not upgrading. Who knows when, and if, it happens? Yes, it does mean some (versions) apps won't be available.

5.1.1

thank you.
5.1.1 for is ok.
sorry, but what is redsnow? howcan i upgrade? i'l visit there website?

Google it my friend. It's not that difficult.

Google a guide on how to keep your current baseband when you upgrade, and how to upgrade to 5.1.1 instead of 6. If you do not keep your current baseband you will lose your unlockability.

redsn0w.us

How is it unlocked? by means of Ultrasn0w?

if so it is sim locked you can upgrade to 6.01 while preserving your 1.59.0 Baseband. You'll will have to jailbreak and reinstall cydia to unlock it again.

An alternative is to find out which carrier the phone is locked to and by a so called IMEI unlock online, for AT&T it will cost about $5, but cost will vary with different carriers.

So first find out how it is unlocked and what Baseband you are on before trying to upgrade.

I never understand people that don't do research before they do something or even. Coming to a forum and asking complete strangers for advice how do you know which of us know the correct answers. somebody gives bad advice and you are sol. there are many good sites like Iclarified and lots of vg video's on youtube. the better one learns themselves the better of they are. Oh some useful links for my signature for this very reason.

Also if your i4 is locked to AT&T you can purchase an IMEI unlock on ebay for it for $3-4 or so.
This way your iphone will be forever unlocked and you will never need to worry about basebands, jailbreaks, unlock hacks, shsh blobs and so on.
Just a suggestion.

I agree & think that having an IMEI unlock should be standard procedure for anyone that needs their phone unlock to other carriers or want to mess w/ jb before their contract expires and could want to use another carrier while in contract. It's so cheap!
