Files is fit for purpose, but it’s got no shine to it. Dropbox, one drive and even Google drive handles media files really well, and it’s actually enjoyable to go through pictures and videos. In files, it’s very rigid and almost basic. You want to view a picture or video you need to download it first, and if you swipe across your pictures/videos while viewing it can sometimes chug and not feel very smooth.

The afore mentioned file apps either have dedicated media buttons to view photos/videos, but also when you enter a folder with media it organises them almost like a photos app and it’s enjoyable to skim through them. This is a feature I have been hoping to see in iOS and iPadOS files now for a few years. Maybe one day it’ll happen.

They have given us incremental improvements, I remember we weren’t even able to swipe across our picture / video files once upon a time, and they finally changed that, so there’s still hope.

In the grand scheme of things it’s incredibly minor, and I accept it’s on the furtherest back seat, where it belongs.

You want to view a picture or video you need to download it first,
This is not true for SMB mounts or SSDs or other external media. What kind of external source are you referring to?

While there are still (in the sense of “was at least already reported as bugs in iOS/iPadOS 14”) several bugs - if Apple’s Files displays e.g. pictures from the internal storage swiping between them is smooth.

There are pictures like e.g. large panorama photos (e.g. >=20000x5000 pixels and Files will try to load and maybe throw an error or just exits after 1or 2 minutes of unresponsiveness) or file certain formats which are apparently not as good supported then others (JPEG support is excellent, PNG or compressed TIFF is indeed much slower read or written).

If anything scrubbing through an MP4 video or swiping through JPEG pics from the internal storage ”feels” the same as in iPadOS 14 on my 11” iPP 2020.

I’m an average joe, and I have no idea what you’re talking about. I’m just referring to using my iPhone to view folders with pictures and videos.

It’s an enjoyable experience using one drive or drop box, but with files it feels too formal. Like I said it’s a minor issue and I don’t expect it to change. It’s fit for purpose.
