It's been a while since I've used an iPhone natively, and when I did I didn't use Instagram as much as I do now. However I just found out that the iPhone natively shoots square photos perfectly for Instagram. This is just a rant, but now that I use Instagram a lot for business, and personal use. I really wish Android or Samsung for that matter also natively shot square photos. I don't always use the Instagram camera to snap photos, and sometimes I want to upload photos later, but have to crop them, or use an app. Which isn't nearly as convenient. Widgets, and customizing your phone is cool I guess, but native square photos would be pretty awesome on Android. I can't be the only one here that wants this feature natively on Android. /rant

Use the instagram app to take pictures?

If I plan to use them for Instagram specifically yes. Otherwise you have to crop them, or use an app like "NoCrop" but it still never looks the same. I know it might sound silly to some, but it would be an awesome feature to have.

While it's not a Samsung, my HTC One allows for a square crop from the camera app.

I just checked my wife's S4, and it can't do it (or I haven't found it).

Yup! Just download ANOTHER camera app so you have one for taking square photos, one for taking regular photos, one for taking photos with filters, etc etc.....

There's something to be said for having stuff like this baked in. Multiple apps that serve similar purposes drive me nuts. Its one of my biggest pet peeves with Android. Luckily, Google has begun to merge some of them (like maps and navigation - they were obviously brain dead to separate the two....)

Give me ONE app with more functionality built in over a variety of choices which are always missing something.....

So this is an Android thing only? Cause the default iPhone camera lacks a ton of settings.

Speaking from my own experience - doesn't lack anything I need at this point in time so I'm happy.

Of course, if I'm speaking from my own experience, I also don't really need the square mode either.

My personal problems lie with messaging and did lie with maps. Also email is irritating. I have great functionality in the gmail app, but can only use a gmail address. And the stock mail app blows in comparison.....so I need two apps, one far inferior to the other, for emails.....

Hangouts is a step in the right direction, but I still prefer having my messaging - both over wifi and via SMS in one place like iMessage. In my mind, video calls fall under calls - and it DOES irritate me that I have a separate FaceTime app on my iPhone now.....though I get it on the iPad.

It's not a camera app what you smoking.

Take pic > Open pic > Share in #square > Share in instagram

Takes 2 seconds, anyone who's smart enough to use an Android, even an iPhone could do that. Cake.

Personally i think instagram needs to ditch the whole square thing. They may like to say its what defines them but no one is using it because of the square photos. Especially since none of the phones or computers come with a square screen. Let people decide the aspect ratio their own.

I actually would prefer it'd be a free google app, rather than native. Native for android means manufacturer and you can't have such a standard for all of them.

Google does have an awesome camera app, with unique features such as photo sphere and lens blur, but they do miss this one. Other missing "default" features:

- squared video
- high FPS / slowmo videos
- quick photo burst
- time lapse
- auto hdr
- store in sdcard
- speak recognition
- multiple focus merger
- dual camera mode
- above all: dual buttons, so we don't need to swap between photo and video

Both recording videos and taking photos on a cellphone is all about opportunity. Speed from grabbing the gadget and being able to record data is crucial. The way we switch between modes is terrible because then you lose the opportunity, and the moment is gone. Panorama, lens blur, all photo enhancements that you need time in hands shouldn't be priority.

The squared photo fits into this, as a way to auto improve quality in the end, without needing to worry about the camera tilting. In fact, Narrative Clip does get this right. Automatic opportunity quick photos should all be squared and rotated into standing position regardless of tilt.

I'd go as far as to say that ideally it would video record the whole moment you have a camera on, and create auto generated thumbnails out of best moments around the few seconds you'd press the shutter button, while still keeping the video later on in case you want to and it isn't garbage. But I guess the clip 2 will soon already do this as well! ;P
