iPad Pro I wish I could repair my iPad Pro 11" for ~$100

I have a 2018 iPad Pro 11" 256GB with broken glass. Wish I could fix it for ~$100 rather than the $500 being asked.

At that price I may as well spend $267 and buy a 2021 iPad Pro 11" 128GB.

I was planning to keep the 2018 until iPadOS stops being updated by year 2025.

This is partly why I get AC+. Of course, that would've cost $129 or $5.99 per month + $49 accidental damage fee but that still feels less painful than a lump sum of $500+tax especially when there are new models available for just a little more.

With that said, I just noticed the OOW repair cost for the 2021 iPP wifi+cellular costs $50 more than than wifi-only. That's annoying.

Don't know where you are, but here in the U.S. a local authorized repair center will charge at least $250 for an iPad Pro 9.7" repair.

The 2021 iPad Pro starts at $799.

This is where the iPads with a non-laminated display have a clear advantage.

Apple Care Plus is worth it imo for any device you carry outside of the home (iPhone, iPad, MacBooks). You never know when something terrible will befall your device and paying $50 is way better than paying $500 or more.

It's not just $50. It's $50 + all of the payments for Apple Care Plus. You have to hedge this against the fact that if this happens a couple years in, you could just put money saved toward an updated model. It's not just automatically worth it. I tend to think Apple jacks up their repair rates to make extended warranties more appealing, but they are still an additional profit center for Apple.

But here’s the thing.. 2 year apple care is $149, and I have 2 years protection with that. If in the 2 years my ipad has broken screen, then it only cost me approximately $50 to get it repaired. $199 is a lot cheaper than $700.. So apple care is definately the cheaper and worth getting. Unless you go for the monthly payments which does not have expiry date, probably cost more.

I’d buy the new version and sell the old one. A quick check of eBay shows that a cellular model with a cracked screen and dented body still sold for $350.

It seems to be $129 if purchased outright. Monthly is $6 x 24 = $144. It depends on your risk tolerance to some degree. I tend to shop refurb options and replace devices around the 3-4 year mark, mostly due to wear and tear. Toward the later end, this option seems less valuable, but again it replaces an unknown cost with a fixed one. It's still a profit center for Apple. They sell a lot of these, so their numbers only have to make sense at an aggregate level, not on a per customer basis.

A cheap case of off Amazon would probably be a better choice, but I guess if you really want your iPad to be naked, AppleCare+ is the way to go.

Claim on your home contents insurance, will probably cost you $100 for the excess/deductible.
