I really hope in os 4 that safari doesn't assume that if i open a link in a new window it doesn't automatically change to that window but instead stays on the same and opens in the background or at worst. Quickly goes back to original page. Sometimes i open up several links from a page and it's a pain to keep going back to my original page

At least make it an option in settings to turn on and off

Yeah, maybe another option when you press and hold a link: "Open in background."

It could then flash the tabs button so that you know how to get to it if you're a new user.

I agree. I commonly open multiple windows when looking at forums then go and read them once all are open. An open in background option would be nice.

I was actually hoping that Safari on iPad would have an "open tabs in background" feature, just like the desktop version. I've sorely missed this feature on my iPhone, so I'm sorry to hear it hasn't made it to the iPad either.

However, do checkout iCabMobile for the iPhone (I believe the app is now universal so it should work on the iPad as well). It does have an "open tabs in background feature".

I'm interested to see now iPad Safari works in practice. Currently on the desktop I use "Open in background tab" a lot and I'm starting to feel like it isn't the best way. Over time I end up with a bazillon tabs open, a lot of which I haven't made a firm decision over.

The iPad's limit of 9 tabs and no "open in background" will force me into a much more linear way of working. I may well find that concentrating on one thing at a time is more efficient.

I agree with this. I often find myself opening 40 tabs in Safari (most of which are useless) and ending up not working as efficiently.

Checkerboards suck and when you're scrolling while loading it keeps jumping back to the top. Also hate that it reloads background tabs rather than saving its current state.

Definitely the3 finger swipe.

I'd also like to be able to have the toolbar at the bottom instead of the top. Using Safari while holding the iPad, the controls at the bottom, like forward and back, would be nice.

This is the perfect solution. Opening a lot of tabs is how I normally browse. I will got to, say engadget, and then open any stories I am interested in reading. Then i will move on to the next blog and do the same saving up my stories until i have gone through all of the sites i am interested in.

Open in background, search within page, files download are all possible with the Mercury Web Browser on my iPhone. I hope it works on iPad. Another one is called the Atomic Web Browser. Has anyone tried it on the iPad yet and if so do they work well?
