so previously, preset combinations of watch and bands were sold; now that we are able to pick the band, I wonder how returns or exchanges happen.

I never thought about going and exchanging a band that came with a watch as it was just assumed that they are basic black/white/pink sand bands and you get them with the watch.

If someone ends up not liking the band they chose, and they want to exchange it, do they have to return the whole watch/band set and buy another watch with a different color?

or do we think they will let us go in and just exchange the band itself? I'm genuinely curious as it would make no sense to return the whole watch now that they let you mix and match the colors.

Ideally, I would love it if they would let us go in and just take the band and ask for an exchange if someone was disappointed with their band once they got it.

if any one tries it or gets an answer, I'd love to hear.

Edit: I guess what made me think more of this is the fact that when you get your phone online, you get a package that looks to be what always ships: its a box cover/sleeve with the Apple Watch box and separate band box inside and plastic wrap around it all.

but, the watch that I chose to pick up at my local apple store was packaged in the same sleeve/outer cover but not plastic wrapped.... and inside was the sealed watch box and a RETAIL band box for the band of choice. I ordered one for delivery and three for in store pickup and all three store pick ups were done the same way. So it looks like the order was sent to the store, a store employee picked the right color watch and then picked a retail box for the band color I selected and then put them together in the store.

the band box is exactly the same one you'd pick up from the shelf yourself if you bought the band alone.

That’s a great question!! I’m sure we’ll find out soon enough. There’s bound to be a few that hate the band they selected and want to exchange it.

Well non-Apple retailers still sell just one type of band per Watch finish. And on the Apple Military discount store the watches also only come in one finish, no band choice.

so I was forced to get a Series 5 Silver Aluminum with white sport band. I hate the band and would be happy to exchange it.

I bought a S5 titanium and not too thrilled with my band selection (sport loop). I’d happily pay the difference to upgrade to a leather loop. I hope to figure out how to exchange it this week.

This is how it played out. I visited the Apple Store and was told to call 1-800-MyApple. Eventually I spoke to a human who explained the process. Within 15 days of receipt of the Watch, you may 'exchange' bands. You are charged for the replacement when the order is made. Once the new band arrives, the old band goes back into the same packaging and is returned. Once Apple receives the returned item, a refund for the amount of the original band is made. If the replacement band is in the same price group as the original, it will be a wash. If there is a difference in price (e.g. exchanging Milanese Loop for Sport band or vice versa), you will pay or be refunded the difference. The delivery time varies depending on the band requested. Some bands are much more popular and for those you will wait longer. I am exchanging a Black Classic Buckle band for a Milanese Loop and the new band is set to arrive 7 days after the replacement order.

Just tried the exchange. They said, if you bought it online, you will have to exchange the whole package (watch + band) and they will give you a new watch/band. If you bought it in store, they can exchange the band without the watch.

What about online order with Store pickup?

That sucks. I will give Apple a call today and see if there is a way around it. Sometimes it depends who you talk to at Apple

Goodluck. What they told me that with online orders both the watch and the band are bundled together under the same sku/order number, so they are unable to exchange only one item. With in-store purchases, both items have separate SKUs.

Ok so I have just spoken to Sales support in the UK and they said that if I wish to exchange the band, I can do it online but if I have a retail store near by, it would be faster and is perfectly ok to take the band to the apple store and get it changed there.
God only knows what the right information is.

Well now I iMessaged Apple and the rep said I can change the color of band In store repeatedly, but she didn’t seem to really understand me honestly.

here’s my situation:
I ordered using the military discount, but with that discount they don’t let you click the Create a Style link where you choose your watch and band combo. You are forced into the default options on the page since the studio thing won’t work.

so I was forced into the White Sport band which I don’t like, just to get my discounted watch.

now I really wanted the Saddle Brown Leather Loop which is only $50 in the studio ($99 standalone). But I was not allowed to select it and thus I want to know if I can upgrade the band and just pay the tier fee.

hmmm, so it sounds like we're still in the "we're figuring it out" stage... it seems like a hassle to exchange the whole watch/band combo.

UPDATE... I went to a local apple store and they were reluctant to swap out the band. Said it as "Sold as a set", "No receipt for just the band", "If i swapped the band, I'd have warranty and return issues since I no longer had the complete item I purchased". They suggested I return the entire watch with band and purchase a new one BUT there is 5 week wait on Titanium models. So I pressed further about swapping in-store. They finally agreed to process the return (as an item with no receipt) BUT they didn't have any leather loop bands in stock.

In the end I walked out of the store with exactly what I walked in with... No band exchange. I might try calling. I might just live with the sport loop band and just buy a $8 knock-off. I need to sleep on it.

It looks like the brown leather loop bands are going to be in the stores very soon, if that is the leather band you are looking for. I ordered one online and I can pick it up in the store on Monday.

I ordered mine online for pick up at the store. I wanted to change the band. They had me return the entire package (cancelled the in store pickup prompting a refund) and then bought another watch with the band color that I wanted.

that's really disappointing and from the outside looking in, a really complex process for what appears to be a simple request. But I guess there's got to be some reason on the back end that maybe we don't know the details on.

thanks for letting us know what happened though.
