I am new to programming apps and I would like some advice on how to start out.

I know C++ well, but I'm not familiar with Cocoa. I bought a book on Objective-C and I think I can figure it out well enough.

And if I decide to make a game, what else would be recommended?

I hope this isn't too vague...

There aren't any published dedicated iPhone books yet (but there are several in the works) but I still found "Cocoa Programming for Mac OS X" by Aaron Hillegass to be a great help.

Couldn't agree more, once you have an understanding of cocoa learning the iPhone way of doing things is a piece of cake.
