Yesterday I tried out a 15" i5 MBP at the Apple Store and installed Steam along with Portal and TF2 to give the graphics a spin. When I cranked both games to native resolution of 1440 the fps went down a bit and TF2 would sort of stutter even on its default resolution of 1152. When I went home I just remembered something about having to manually switch the graphics from "intel hd" to "nvidia".

Is the mediocre performance due in part from not switching graphics modes?

No need to switch from the intel gpu to the discrete gpu. Its automatic depending on the load of the gpu. To increase Tf2 performance turn off aa and vsync.

This makes me knowingly a bit sad but hey it is Steam's first time. For them to come this far in such short notice is quite plausable.

Its not Valve or apples fault for the less than perfect frame rate compared to windows. Both have completely different APIs. GL is no where near as tweaked as DX and i assume it will stay that way forever.
