I'd been hanging on for the 2011 Mac mini refresh, and when it was launched I dashed out to pick up the fastest Server available (assuming that was the fastest mini available).

A few months later I was surprised to notice that whereas my i7 server runs at 2.0GHz, there's a BTO option for a i7 that runs at 2.7GHz for the non-Server model (only). I would have definitely gone for that option with the Server had it been available, but it's not available for the Server, even BTO.

My i7 Server certainly runs warmer than my older mini.

Do we assume that the extra drive in the Server model does not allow enough cooling for a 2.7GHz i7 option, so it's limited to the non-Server model with a single drive?

Could there be another reason Apple doesn't offer a Server with i7 running at 2.7 GHZ?

The 2.7 i7 is only a dual core, the server i7 is a quad. Depending on what you are doing with it the 2.7 may be a bit faster, though it comes with a single, slower hard drive compared to the server, so I/O would be a bit crippled. With multithreaded apps, the little quad easily bests the 2.7, it would be my choice....

Ah, that's interesting, I had assumed i5 == dual-core and i7 == quad-core. Thanks for the clarification.

There are quad core i5 and i7 chips and dual core i5 and i7 chips. The mini server is the only one that uses a quad core (i7 2 GHz). The other minis use various dual core chips (i5 and i7).

the fastest dual core would be this:

the fastest quad core is this

neither one is far and above what is in the minis now
