i7-4990 and E5 v2

is there any difference between the xeons and the i7s besides the multi-cpu ability of the xeons?

i7-4990 could be a nice singlecore in a mac pro - and probably cheaper than the E5 v2.

Not all Xeons support multi-CPU configurations. There are Xeons with the same specifications as the i7-3820, 3930K and 3960X. The i7 allowing overclocking and the E5 supporting ECC memory being the main differences for workstation usage.

The i7-4990 was only a rumoured processor and doesn't appear to exist. Intel have 3 i7s as they have for years. The i7-4920k, i7-4930k and i7-4960X. So expect the E5-1620V2, E5-1650V2 and E5-1660V2 to match them specification wise with the differences as they are now.

Which means the E5-1620V2 and E5-1650V2 are the only two worth using. A Mac Pro wouldn't be cheaper if Apple used i7s and would then not support 16GB and 32GB DIMMs. The 200MHz clockspeed and 3MB L3 cache you get from the E5-1660V2 aren't worth $600.

according to this intel roadmap, there are some cpus coming in Q3/2013 - one of them seems to be the i7-4990, at least that's what all pages write (although they prolly copy from each other).

Yeah I believe it was this site that claimed those part numbers, with no source. Others went with it as they do these days.

It wouldn't budge pricing anyway. If you look at those i7s and find the Xeon 16xx equivalent, they're usually identical in pricing. Sometimes there's a difference of $10-20 retail.

jsut got offered a lenovo dual c20 system with 2x 5650 hexacores for 1200 euros (with receipt). I think I'm gonna join the dark side after all these years (win7), everything there is much cheaper. a quadro k2000 and I am sorted for the next 6 months. only 24 gigs of ram tho.

From what I remember in the discussion about these a while back there was a difference in the heat sync plate on the top of the CPU that made the i7 a slight challenge to get installed with Apple's heat syncs.
