I have the absolute worst Apple luck, or they have the worst quality control. I am trying not to be livid, but good LORD this is really disappointing.

I just unloaded the iMac and got it all setup on the desk, started it, went through the boot process, and down on the bottom of the screen, in the right corner, I notice three "dots" all clustered together. I don't think this are stuck pixels -- it looks like dust got between the screen and the glass.

FFS

Pictures attached. I am very, very bummed right now as I know this will now be another 2 week turnaround, and there is no point in setting this up.

Could have gotten damaged on the way...that really sucks. I had to also return my first iMac, bad HD, but it's been a rock and Apple's products are sturdy mostly.

Sucks this had to happen. :(

What really blows is you could totally take the glass away and clean it yourself, but if it breaks :(

Now you will have to wait another two weeks for one crappy luck mate

what are those purple/green stripes on there? Yeah if you think it's just dust, get yourself 2 suctions cups from an autoparts store, pull that sucker off, blow it off, and glass back in.

bah, if its just dust i'd pull the glass and clean it, stuck pixels on the other hand, send it back.

it's not hard to pull the glass, follow the ifixit.com instructions with the suction cups.

I've removed it before on my 24" iMac, not difficult, but seems daunting.

might be longer than 2week wait time, and it may come with stuck pixels next time.

Do you have an apple store? They could pull the glass for you.

Yeah, I called Apple Support and they made an appt for me there at the store, so hopefully they can do something to fix this. Stuck pixels would be about 10x worse because then it's argument time.

I have been lucky in that regard -- I've never had a stuck pixel on a monitor from Apple before. This one is so dense, it won't surprise me if I have one. But 3 or 4 -- that would suck.

The real question I'm asking is do I bother setting this up at all, or do I just box it back up and wait until I know it's staying with me....sigh. Waited forever for this thing....

I'd say its worth it to pull the glass and get it cleaned weather it be at the apple store.

my last iMac an early 2009 24" 2.93ghz had 1 red stuck pixel in the middle lower part of the screen. I didn't notice it until I changed the wallpaper, the Aurora wallpaper disguises a lot.

1 of my 2 Dell mini 10v's has a stuck pixel(or blotchiness on the right) on the right. in short I sent it back.

My HP laptop I bought 3 years ago had a stuck pixel and I had to exchange it as well!

IMHO, if you don't have any stuck pixels and the only problem is dust, then get the dust removed, you really might be setting yourself up for another one with other problems.:p

It's dust

Okay, confirmed by turning off the iMac and shining a flashlight on the area -- I can totally see the specs, so it's dust. That's a relief. Now the question is can they clean that off without introducing MORE dust? Anyone have experience with that?

Yes, I've done it without adding more dust. You need one of those compressed air dusters. Just be careful not to shake the can, it sprays out some propellant that can be hard to clean off. As for the glass I've used Camera SLR Lens paper and solution works like a charm! Just dont clean the whole glass just the area that needs it.

Just make sure to spray off any dust on the glass insides and LCD panel before you reattach the glass.

Any clue where one buys those suction cups?

Walmart should have the small ones look at the home area for the kind with the metal hooks to hang stuff.

I have this one which I bought from SEARs in the AS seen on TV area was around 12bucks and I can use it for another purpose after I'm done.

Okay, I may just do this myself then as it will be 10x easier than taking it apart, schleping it to the Apple Store deep in the mall, waiting around, etc. If anyone has had this done at the Apple Store, is it a pretty fast operation for them?

I would just take it to an Apple store if I was you, especially if one was not that far away. Why take a chance and damage the machine even worse? For the time it would take you to get the iMac apart, and get to the area, its not THAT much longer than just going to the Apple store and having it under their supervision. And that way, if they cause a problem, its their responsibility.

I'd take it to the apple store too, one tiny smear on the inside of the glass and youll be pulling it all out again. Getting glass spotless isnt easy, ask anyone with a lens coating on their glasses.

I would set it up and use it in the mean time, get apple to transfer everything across if they have to replace it, its their fault after all.

I remember fitting an afterburner(led backlight) to my game boy advance. The amount of times i had to take the damn thing apart to get rid of tiny hairs or dust particles. It was a nightmare and that was a 3"ish screen.

Yep, take it in and wait. Or ship it back for a new one in a few weeks.

If you take it apart, and haven't done it before ... I can see you dropping the flashlight onto the LCD while looking around at the cool machine.

If it's just dust, then get yourself a can of compressed air and just pull the glass away from the screen at the top and blow it out. It's not rocket science or open heart surgery. :)
