I am interested in how all you mobile computer warriors store your files. I have a lot of mp3s, videos, pictures and so on and I don't know whethere I should store them on my powerbook and have them available at all times, or store them on my fileserver.

How do most of you guys do it (if you have multiple computers. I am looking for a good solution but haven't quite figured it out. I like to use iPhoto but is there a way to store the photos on a remote server. I know you can have remote files with itunes, but if you are not connected to the server how do you listen to them.

Basically, what would you guys recommend, and how do you work? Thanks guys.

well, to answer you question how to listen to them (the files) if you are not connected to the server. the answer you can't, plain and simple.

all i do is backup my laptop files to a fileserver running a mirroring raid array so i have two copies of my data, and any extra stuff i want to keep. you could have a remote connection to your server through the internet and you will always have access to your files. if space is your problem you can upgrade your hard drive to faster bigger drive. imho one of the prices you pay for mobility is this. you can't travel with all your data especially if it large quanities. if you are complaining about not having access to your mp3, you can setup and streaming server and you should be happy. you will need a ftp server to have access to your photos.
 
I store everything on my Power Mac and only call upon the files from my iBook when needed. If I know I'm going to need a file on my iBook, I just copy it over. When I'm done, I delete it. It works pretty well. If you have a file server, why would you need to keep everything on your laptop?
 
i have a couple of external firewire drives and an iPod. the iPod is nice, because i can take my music with me and work critical files too.

unfortunately, i haven't really found an easy backup/sync system for my files (especially if one has a multi-computer system).
 
I had a 200 gig 7200 rpm drive so I went to CompUSA and bought a 45$ housing for it with a firewire port. I Store ALL my files in my profile so I used a syncronizing backup program to keep all the files in my home directory on my external drive. If I start running out of room i just delete any large downloads or mp3s I dont listen to anymore because I know I can always run them again when I plug in, so if you have any extra HD's lying around it is a cheap way to add alot of storage and also works GREAT for rendering / big photoshop files!
 
Currently the 80GB internal drive on my PowerBook carries all my files but I'm looking to hopefully buy an external 7200RPM FireWire hard drive later this year to store my video on. Currently I have 9GB of music, and lots of programs installed. Video storage currently means I only 13GB free, but I'm looking to clear that all away once I've finished my family video project. An iPod would be nice..
 
My MDD PowerMac at home is the main computer with a ton of storage. Everything is there.

My iBook goes to work/vacation/etc with me and has what I need on it. Nothing hardcore. If I create something new on the iBook it gets transferred to the PowerMac.

iPod has a Panther install on it for emergencies. It also has some backups. Mostly I use it to transfer things from computer to computer.

Thumb Drive has misc odds and ends on it--things that I would need to have if I suddenly didn't have my own computers. Ditto for iDisk--that's just the easier way to do the same thing.
