I realize the iBookstore will only be available to the US at launch, and while that's a bummer, I can deal with it. A really sour detail would be if we couldn't even use the normal app for whatever reason.

I imagine the iBookstore isn't available due to the difficulty of licensing in other countries, but if they took that part out of the iBooks app for international users I can't imagine what the problem would be if we used our own ePub books. (Apple now says we can use our own books, as long as they're non-DRM ePubs.)

If for whatever reason they don't allow the normal iBooks to be distributed internationally, sans the store, I've heard whispers we can create a fake US iTunes account and use that to download the app. Is this true? Could I continue using my Canadian apps?

Also, if we can use our own apps, how would that work for syncing them? Would we use that "mounted disk mode" we've heard a bit about and drag and drop them like a flash drive? Or would there be an iTunes panel like Music?

You will likely have Amazon.com Kindle App that would allow you to read ebooks.

I would suspect that will work great.

Yeah, but would it follow the dodgyish Kindle tradition of not allowing text to speech for those of us that don't see so well ? iBooks supports the VoiceOver screen reader. Amazon ain't having my money unless the book in question can be read aloud to me, thus making it accessible to me as a person with a severe sight impairment.

(gets off soap box now ;) )

I don't know about the Kindle app, but the Kindle itself supports text to speech. If a kindle book does not have that feature, that is due to the publisher and not Amazon/Kindle.

Is it possible to put your books into the Kindle app? I didn't think you could, but I use Stanza which I figure will get an iPad version out quickly. If they do't they will be pretty much washed away by an ePub reading iBook app from Apple.

It does and yes it is, but isn't it really the same thing when you get right down to it ? Amazon let the publishers roll them over at the expense of accessibility imho (and I'm obviously not the only one who thinks that, one has to only look on the web to find out how annoyed people were when Amazon caved in). Apple obviously haven't been rolled over. Which is one up to them in my book (hah ! pun ! ; ) )

Anyhoo, from what I read (I don't have it so this is going on what I read on the net), the iphone Kindle app doesn't support tts. That's why it's might be an alternative for some, but not for me.
