Is there any reason, other than Apple's own desire, why the iBookstore can't be accessed via iPhone/Touch? Do you guys think it will be an option in OS 4.0?

According to reports, books in the Bookstore are specially formatted for the iPad.

According to reports, books in the Bookstore are specially formatted for the iPad.

According to Steve Jobs, they're in ePub format, which is completely reflowable to fit your display device. There is no reason they could not be displayed on an iPhone. From Wikipedia:

EPUB is designed for reflowable content, meaning that the text display can be optimized for the particular display device. The format is meant to function as a single format that publishers and conversion houses can use in-house, as well as for distribution and sale. It supersedes the Open eBook standard.[1]

We can always hope...

the reason is so that you will buy an iPad to read ebooks, it is a sales ploy plain and simple

Really, so you're saying that Apple wouldn't want the iBookstore on the iPhone/Touch.....hmmmmm, I'm sure theyd love to cut into that Free Kindle app thats on their. Some people, I think they just comment to be heard, but show no thought. The bookstore will be on the iPhone, I dont know anything, but I know businesses arent dumb either. They want the iBookstore on the MILLLIONS of iDevices already out there, you sir, need to sleep....

I'm totally fine with just keeping my Kindle app on my phone, but I wouldn't be against an Apple iBookstore app for the iPhone. Either way, I win :)

Just get the Kindle app, you'll be happier.

seriously, i believe apple will make it for ipod touch and iphone as well, seeing as how there are several other apps out there that do similar things... the kindle app isnt bad at all, kinda surprised it was free.

you sir need to wake up, businesses use this ploy all the time to try to promote new products, i never said they won't have the ibookstore on an iphone or ipod touch, i said the reason they'd keep it off those devices is to promote the ipad. so get off your soapbox and stop getting those panties in a bunch

OP asked for a reason, so i gave him one

some people just like to reply to posts before actually fully comprehending a post and just jump to their own conclusions

But it's a bit silly since anyone who (like me) is comfortable enough with the screen size of the iPhone/Touch would just use any of the ebook apps available. Unless iBookstore has exclusive titles like Harry Potter, I don't see how it'd be much of a selling point for the iPad in itself.

I couldn't imagine switching to iBookstore. I've been using Stanza for some time and it was one of the selling point for the iPhone to me. I couldn't imagine iBookstore offering as much as Stanza does.

doesn't McGraw Hill have some sort of deal with them?

I may be mistaken but I think that deal got dropped when their CEO decided to leak information on the tablet the day before it's introduction.

I know for sure they were removed from the presentation.
