I have a legally unlocked 3GS (purchased in Greece).

It came with 3.0 on it, but I used redsn0w to jailbreak it. It has the 3.01 features, but with the 3.0 baseband.

My question is this: is it too late to capture the IBSS/IBEC files now that I've installed iTunes 9, and that 3.1 is out?

If not, can someone point me to the most reliable resource on how to capture these files. It's not the end of the world if I can't jailbreak in the future, but it sure would be nice if I could.

Thanks in advance,

Sadly, it is. Capturing the iBEC and iBSS certificates could only be done during a DFU restore. Since Apple has stopped signing 3.0 versions of the operating system, it is sadly no longer possible to extract these files. Sorry!

Wait, so because 3.1 is out, even if you have 3.0 installed, you can't capture the files?

I have a Vista partition on my MBP, and on it, I have iTunes 8 installed. Would it be possible to use the windows programs necessary for extracting my ECID, and then put my phone into DFU to grab the IBSS/IBEC files through a restore to 3.01 using iTunes 8?

Thanks again, in advance :)

I don't think so becaus it's an issue with the firmwares and apple servers, not with iTunes

I remember getting a text from Cydia about capturing these files for me. Now that I need to capture them, the text is gone?

Did Cydia stop capturing these files for us? or is it somewhere I'm not seen....

Actually, you needed to capture them when the announcements first appeared, before it was no longer possible. We have been warned for weeks that it might happen. The Dev Team told us it was possible that Apple would make it impossible to capture these certificates. On Wednesday, Apple stopped signing 3.0 firmwares for restore, doing just that. It's now too late for anyone who did not heed the warnings.

These certificates are specific to your iPhone and could only be created after communication with Apple's servers. Since Apple will no longer sign these files, it is impossible to capture them. This also made it impossible for Cydia to capture your ECID hash, since Cydia itself relied on the Apple servers through a connection to iTunes. It's not that Saurik doesn't want to help you out, but the window in which he was able to has closed.

BUT....if you open the window in Cydia about upgrading to 3.1, it also says that someday, someone might make it possible to upgrade to 3.1 and jailbreak your phone again.

Hopefully someday, someone will in fact do just that for all you people who didn't save your certs to Cydia.

I know I did, thankfully.

Wow sucks for people who waited now I'm really glad I have both my files sitting safely on my desktop and three other places just incase. Just for the hell of it I did the capture on Cydia so I think I have all my bases covered.

Well said, nice explanation.

I vaguely remember trying to capture these files when I was first told to. What files/file names get saved and where on Windows? I'm thinking of searching my system for them although I also think the process failed :-(

What if your phone has never been jailbroken? I have an iPhone 3gs running 3.0. So I can never jb my iPhone?

Not without a new exploit in 3.1. Though apparently chronic team have one, so there is some hope, depending on what the exploit is. Unlock would appear to be definitely gone as an option though.

looks like apple is finaly tightening their grip on the jailbreak community, but there is always a way to get arounnd things nothing is fool proof try as they might.
