If you open iCal, the icon in the dock switches from its default 'July 17' date, changing to display the current date.

Is there a way to make it display the current date all the time, even if you don't open the application??

cheers

:D

Not without opening iCal (without some serious scripting).

One solution: Add iCal to Login items and check the "Hide" checkbox.

And next time you have a question, please search and/or browse the forums a little, there's a very good chance the question already have been answered, like this one... ;)

Well I typed in iCal and date, ( I think  ) and didn't get that --

The thing I find off-puttting about search is that it seems to display any mention of the words mentioned anywhere in any thread at any time -

Is there a way to make the search limited to thread titles only..

Yes... but you have to go into Advanced Search.

Im due to Switch soon, can anybody say how much memory iCal uses up while hidden, so that I can have the correct date shown?

Looks like about 16 MB. Not a big deal, especially since you'll probably be checking iCal every day anyway.

Hmm, on a 2.0GHz iMac G5 running Tiger w/ 1GB of RAM... my iCal hidden is taking up 28.58MB of real memory and 227.14MB of virtual memory. And fayans, no big deal-- we all miss simple things. :D

I know what Virtual Memory is in its basic terms, but why is it taking so much up?

From what I've read on MR... Mac OS is designed to use up as much RAM as possible, essentially, to not 'waste' any memory. As such, many apps will 'claim' a certain amount of memory for its own uses but if you the user, delegates that an app must be used, then that virtual memory will be re-allocated so that the app you're using will have more RAM at its disposal. I found a recent thread that is somewhat relevant: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/150924/[/URL

if all you're concerned about is the correct date, then you can use the calender widgit and ignore iCal
