iCal doesn't know the date!

how do i get iCal to update to the correct date in the dock on my girlfriend's iBook?

the icon is perpetually stuck at july17th

(i don't use iCal so have never had to fix this)

As iGary has suggested... if you leave the app open (but hide it in your dock)... it will display today's date.

As iGary said you can't unless iCal is active...

How about setting iCal to open but be hidden on startup this would mean that the dock icon would change but it would not fly up on screen everytime you restart.

This can be done through system preferences>>Accounts>>Login items>>Add iCal and tick the box to hide..

auto-open and hide seems like a good idea, i do that with iTunes and adium, can tell her to add iCal...

Agggghhh, this has ALWAYS bugged me, too!

It DOES seem pretty not-like-Apple.

Stupid icon... being all... static.

If I were to just put it in my startup folder and keep it open perpetually, how much memory does a hidden iCal take up?

I'd say a hidden iCal would take from 40-80mb depending how full up you have it....Not too bad but that RAM could be used for extra widgets...

Some code has to be running to change the icon. Without using hacks or special one-off case code in the dock itself the only process that can change a dock icon is the app itself so you can't have a background invisible helper app that starts on login update the date either.

how much memory does a hidden iCal take up?

Mine is open but hidden and via Activity Monitor indicates 25MB at present.

Yeah, and any little separate app that changes the iCal icon won't actually be a part of iCal, so that would be a bit weird. Two separate apps?

First let me say I'm not a programmer. However, when you open the activity monitor there is a process called iCalAlarmScheduler that is always running whether iCal is running or not. If they have that process running why couldn't they have another iCal process that updates the icon? Or why not have the iCalAlarmScheduler have one of it's alarms be for midnight each night that would run a script to change the icon? I mean it sure sounds like it should be simple enough. Though personally the icon date thing doesn't bother me nearly as much as everyone else because I almost always have iCal open anyway.
