iCal iCloud Calendar Groups

iCloud has shifted all my local calendars to the cloud and has in the process removed all the groupings I had set up.

How can I group iCloud calendars? Using File>New Calendar Group in the Lion application just creates a local group on my MacBook but not on the cloud. I can't see any way to do it for the iCloud calendars, either from the MacBook or via icloud.com. (I don't have an iOS device, so I don't know how or whether one might help.)

Yeah, same here. And if I create a group on the icloud.com, it doesn't show up on my Macbook.

It also doubled all my calendars for iCloud. So I have "On my Mac" and "iCloud" calendars now. Should I delete the "On my Mac" ones??

Will test it on iOS5 once I succeed to update my iPod Touch...

My experience was different. It removed all the On My Mac calendars entirely and shifted them to iCloud.

How have you created groups on iCloud.com? I can't see an option to do it on the website.

It automatically copied all of my "On my Mac" calendar groups to iCloud. Same names, same colours, everything.

So do you think it is safe to delete local Mac calendar groups? What if something goes wrong on their servers? Can you end up with nothing?

I wish it had preserved my groups when it moved everything over to iCloud. I'd also prefer it to have left the local copies where they were rather than moving them all so that I don't have the original local copies at all now.

It's very strange that people seem to be finding that iCloud does all sorts of different things to iCal. I didn't get any duplication of events, for example, but I've seen lots of people saying they did.

I think that if I still had the local copies I'd back them up as .ics files using File>Export… Then maybe put them all in one Calendar Group and minimize it to save space. You can back up the versions listed as on iCloud in the same way, which is what I've done. I might have to get into the habit of doing that regularly so that I don't end up with nothing if the servers start playing up. However, I did select Calendar>Go Offline and then switch my wifi off before quitting and relaunching iCal, and all my calendars are still there, so I assume there is still a local copy on my machine somewhere. If that's the case then Time Machine should back them up for me.

If you keep actually using both iCloud and On My Mac versions of all your calendars then you'll end up having to update both of them as you go along, which would be a pain.
