wawaweewa! this is all im really waiting for!! icall promoted themselves pretty hard right out of the gate with their proof of concept video yet nothing has been said since!! truphone is great when calling long distance but all i want is icall and their "swap incoming to wifi" feature... my service isnt the best so it would be great to be able to answer over wifi. After icall im still waiting on slingplayer. Same deal, theyve shown proof during a demonstration yet nothing has been said as to whether or not they are actually releasing an app anytime soon. Anybody find anything mentioning timelines for either of these apps??? icall and slingplayer, please answer my plea for your eagerly awaited apps!

I'm right there with you buddy! I've been using Slingbox forever with my Dell Axim sync'd through my RAZR but I got news for you, I REALLY, REALLY don't think we'll ever get it and I've done a lot of digging and a lot of writing. Let's face it, Apple has their hands so far in our pockets that they won't even release free demos of the apps, just so we have to buy, buy and re-buy apps. First they need to take baby steps, then maybe they'll learn to crawl and hopefully oneday they'll be able to finally walk with their heads up and learn what it actually means to support their customers instead of just figuring out more creative ways to get more money from them. Don't get me wrong, they're very superior in many ways and their platform is unrivaled, but at the end of the day they're better marketers and theives than they are a good company.

Factoring out the Apple limitations, competitive issues with iTunes, and bandwidth/battery issues, I honestly think Sling is having a world of problems right now. I am a huge Sling fan, owning one of the first boxes they ever sold, literally but they have been missing release schedules all over the place lately. I wonder how much their integration with Echostar is impacting their ability to execute on their development roadmap?
The BB client is taking forever, and the "POC Alpha" for the iPhone that was on display at the WWDC I think was done to pacify/quiet people down who were clamoring for the SlingiPhone. I really hope i'm wrong but I would be surprised to see the Slingplayer for the iPhone anytime soon. They haven't even opened it up for beta testing yet.

I heard early August for iCall. I'm getting anxious for iCall also, that way at home when I get long distance call from the states I can just switch it to voip and it's free.
I'm not gonna debate the fact the Sling likes to sleep on things, that goes without saying - you're absolutely right, BUT.....They did have a nice demo (on a jailbroken phone) ready for the conference and yet Apple wouldn't let them in, so they were forced to settle at a Starbucks around the corner. I can't justify Apple's actions in that scenario as being anything but greedy. Sling realizes the potential of expanding its market drastically (and the resulting increase in sales that will follow) if such an app were to be released, and they're being at least what seems to be VERY pro-active about getting it up and running. When you have a chance check out the Sling Community forums, there were some interesting posts by the beta developer and some other Sling eomplyees adressing the "Apple issue". For Apple to shut the doors on such a developer that could so drastically change their image and do nothing but completely please their customers shows nothing but lack of class. Even if they didn't want to step on AT&T's toes with the whole "resource hog" issue, they still could have let them in out of good nature and showed some kind of willingness to work with them (even if for nothing else but to please their customers) but then again Apple only refers to us as their crop to grow, so we really don't matter.

The problem with iCall is that, for it to transfer incoming calls directly to WiFi (like in their concept video) they would need to have their app always running in the background, which they can't do. That is probably causing the biggest delay, trying to figure out a way to switch an active call from cell to wifi, by launching their app while on a call.
No, they wouldn't. If you notice on their video on the icall website, he receives a call, then goes and opens icall, and that's when it detects the call and offers to switch it. There's no need for it to run in the background, but it does require an extra step from you to actually launch the program while you're in a call.
But I also heard early August, and still haven't seen ANY news on the app. I even signed up for their email list, and haven't gotten anything yet. Just an update or two would be nice...
The original proof of concept video they posted featured it automatically detecting the call and prompting a switch. I didn't know they released a new, updated video.
There is not way for it to automatically detect such a thing. No apps can run in the background. I haven't been keeping up with this app but you may have seen a jailbreak version of the app that wasn't using the iPhone SDK?
Which is why in my initial reply to this thread I stated that the delay was probably caused by that. Although, after viewing the new video posted I stated what you quoted.

This is absolutely correct. iCall has been sitting in the black hole otherwise known as the App Store "approval" (or nonapproval, depending how you look at it) process. It's developers have started an online petition calling for Apple to have better communication with it's developer community. However, it's probably AT&T that is making Apple block this app.
why would at&t want this app blocked and not fring or truphone. I call has been comming soon since July 08. I don't think it's comming because there is no logical reason why it's not here now.
