A few really dumb questions !

Can iChat be used with friends who do not have Macs ?

A friend who lives 200 miles away has only got a PC.

I've never used iChat before so very uncertain what it can and can't do.

Does it do speech ?

Any thoughts very welcome !

:)

iChat isn't a Mac only program.
It uses your AIM screen name. So as long as your friends have AIM/AOL you can chat it up.
iChat is just a built in AIM messenger for the Mac, that's in my opinion better than the AIM messenger itself.

Yup. You each just need a jabber compatible account. Gmail talk, MobileMe, AIM, Mac.com, etc.

Can do speech and video. But, to be honest, I use adium because of it's compatibility with Facebook chat. It's really easy to use, and can be customized in a number of ways. Then, when I need to talk or video chat, I use Skype.

Brilliant !!!

Looking at gmail talk and Video too,,,,

(gmail video does not work on iMag FG4 = update)

When something works I'll post back !

Skype works well is free and does both PC and Mac.

At the moment the webcam works on iChat but not Skype.

So IChat is it but I don;t know how to set up the account.

Going through preferences I get AOL or Bonjour and I've not got the first clue as to what to do next. It needs to connect to anything that has video and speech that works on a PC. the Google thing maybe ? any others that are known to work ?
