I just installed the latest version of iChat (I'm on Panther), and I'm having trouble getting video to work with windows AIM people (using varying versions of AIM, including 5.5). Either it says they've got a cam on when they haven't, the "Invite to video chat" option is greyed out on some people and not on others, seemingly regardless of AIM version, or I invite them and it says "waiting for response" and the person never gets a message to say I've invited them at their end, and it tells them my cam is offline.

Anyone any ideas? :/

Cheers,

Mark

Which camera do you have? iSight or an other model?

Do you have a firewall on?
Do the other people you try to chat with, have a firewall?

Are all the people you try to invite in your list?

It's not an isight its a DV cam, sharp, that works with yahoo/imovie etc. fine.

I do have a firewall, that could be it...

And yes the other people are on my list :)

Would a firewall stop them from being able to see my cam was online though?

As to a firewall read this tech note from Apple:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=93208

As for AIM, for interoperability with iChat v2.1 the other party must be using AIM v5.5 only. Earlier versions won't "see" iChat users A/V status or be able to connect, as far as I understand it.

Anecdotal evidence reports to very long connect times, crappy video from the PeeCee user and random connection problems (drops, slow framerates).

Also: Try lowering your Bandwidth Limit in the iChat preferences under "Video" to keep from flooding the network connection. Perhaps you are hitting a bottleneck between you and the other party's connection.

You are dealing with Windows afterall, who knows what problems are going to occur.

OK I finally got one person to the "starting video chat" bit after they accepted, but then my whole comp freezes. It's done this 3 times now. Firewall off now, and I can move the mouse but do nothing else. Have to force a restart.

Wait for the next version I guess :p

I just got the iSight on my Mac 20". The first AIM buddy worked FLAWLESSY. I simply plugged in the iSight, iChat loaded up, and BAM, we were conferencing (awesome picture quality and almost real-time).
But as for my other buddy on AIM (latest version), with disabled firewalls, we could not connect. When I invited him, and he ACCEPTED, it would simply say, "connecting" without ever connecting...
I don't know if I'm missing something... very curious here :)
