I have occasional travel with my work and so I am a big fan of portable music speakers. They are easy to pack and usually offer far better sound than the standard hotel options or the anaemic sound you get from a phone speaker. I've had a chance to test out a lot of different Bluetooth speakers of late and I'm genuinely impressed with the quality these small portable speakers can deliver. This speaker from iClever follows that trend.
Inside the box is the Speaker, a micro USB cable for charging, a 3.5mm audio cable & instruction manual.
This is a compact Bluetooth speaker measuring in at 98 x 90 x 49mm and weighing 286g. It feels very sturdy and well-built with its rugged exterior and rubberised casing. This features a Li-ion battery which is rated for up to 10 hours of play back which is a great time for a compact unit. It can also be fully charged in 3 hours.
On the front and rear of the speaker is a recessed metal speaker grill with a status LED sitting above the front grill. On top there are buttons for power, volume/track skipping and a multifunction button covering play, pause and call answering. On the left side is a small rubber door covering the micro USB charging port and the 3.5mm audio input. There is a thick rubber hand strap attached to the top right corner which folds down relatively flat and can also be removed with the aid of a screwdriver.
Connecting is done over Bluetooth 4.0 or using the supplied 3.5mm line in cable. While both options work well, the Bluetooth option offers up more convenience and the 4.0 revision allows for good battery life. To keep things topped up, the supplied micro USB cable can be used with any powered USB port.
This single speaker driver design with a passive subwoofer meaning the small enclosure is dedicated to moving as much air as possible offering a surprisingly rich sound. There is no stereo on offer but given the size of this unit, you would not get much in the way of stereo separation anyway. By sticking with a single, larger speaker driver, this unit offers a much fuller sound for such a small size of speaker. The driver is rated at 3w which is more than adequate for this size of speaker. I have been quite surprised at how good this speaker sounds and you can really feel the kick when in hand.
This speaker also features an IP65 rated Waterproof coating which protects against water splashes, light rain, mud and dust, making it an excellent choice for outdoor trips or use around water.
This is a great sounding speaker considering the very small size and price. I like this single driver design as it allows a bigger sound than a comparatively sized stereo unit. There are many portable speakers out there but this is definitely one of the best all-round packages for price, size and importantly, audio quality I have tried. Throw in the ability to work as a hands free speaker system for mobile phones with its clear call quality and this adds up to one compelling package.
