iCloud already out of space.

Just finished putting iOS 5 on my 16gb iPhone 4 and my 16gb iPad 2 and I got a error message that I was out of iCloud storage and the iPad could not be backed up.

What does it back up to use that much space? Owning multiple devices doesn't increase your iCloud space?


I'm not even sure what's going on.

Looks like if you turn iCloud backup on it backs up the entire image of your device and takes up all your space. So you have to either turn that feature off or buy more space.

IF you go in to the iCloud area in Settings you can explore the backup and it will tell you exactly what is using all the space and give you the option to exclude certain apps to reduce the size.

Initially I had a problem on my iPad as I had around 3Gb of RAW Photos imported in to the Photos app, didn't need them to removed them and excluded AVPlayerHD to stop it backing up any large avi files.

My 16Gb iPhone and 64Gb iPad total about 1Gb for backups.

Agreed. I know you can go in and turn off individual app settings for backup, but it would seem that if you have one mobileme/icloud account but multiple devices, they should allow 5g x each device for space.

Yeah they need to increase the space with the amount of ios devices you have.

i dont think that's the case for me. my backup says it's only 1.6gb, but im still almost out of space

The issue for me was I had videos in one of the video players and that took me over the limit. It's something we cannot do now. Put "documents" or videos in a video player like VLC and backup since it takes too much space. You need to convert and put it in the videos app of the iPad/iPhone so it won't back those up. There's no way to exclude an app from backup. Yet.

Actually, you can remove an app from being backed up. The issue is that you have to backup first and then remove the app from being backed up. If you have too much data to backup, you have to delete, backup, then add back the data.

Yep, managed to fix my problem by redoing the backup. now i have 3.3gb left.
