This same thing has bugged me for awhile. When I created my Apple ID (long ago) they did not allow you to use an Apple e-mail address. A number of years later, they changed this policy (as I understand) and there have been several old threads about this.

Would also like to change my Apple ID to my iCloud address, but whenever I change anything related to iCloud (password, adding a new device, etc) it always seems to be a pain, with multiple alerts appearing on every device I own. This makes me very reluctant to mess with things, so I just leave it alone.

You could try reading through this old thread and see if it helps. Pretty sure there are other similar threads here if you look also

[edit]Sorry, looks lke that thread is the opposite of what you want. A quick search found these articles, which might be more helpful

Here is how Apple says to do it.

Change your Apple ID - Apple Support

From the article:
Keep in mind that you can't use an email address that's already in use by another Apple ID. If you use services like iCloud or Messages, make sure to sign in to those services with your new Apple ID.

In the above statement from the article, I am not sure if just having an iCloud email address is the same as it being an Apple ID. I'm thinking it is not, but not sure. You might start a chat with Apple to see if what you want to do is possible. I have a family member in the same situation so would be good to know.

If your @icloud.com email already exists, and it’s not on your @gmail.com Apple ID - then no, you can’t switch to that @icloud.com address.

Any @icloud.com email address is already tied to an Apple ID at creation. It might be the Apple ID (in other words, a stand-alone account using only that email) or it might be an “email alias” on a different ID, using any email address as its primary. The trick is - once a given @icloud.com email address is assigned to an Apple ID, it’s there permanently. You could delete the alias, I suppose, so the email doesn’t work at all any more - but if that’s done, the email is permanently unavailable (you can’t then set it up on the same OR a different ID in the future).

So, the only way to convert a 3rd-party email Apple ID to an @icloud.com address, is if the @icloud.com address is an email alias on that same Apple ID. In that case, once the @icloud.com address has been created more than 30 days ago, you can do it. Otherwise, no.
