Is it just me or is there no way to set up an archive button for an iCloud email account like there is for Gmail? Seems like this nullifies the existence of the All Mail folder.

It exists for iOS5 but not for Lion Mail or the web interface.

Go to the icloud settings, tap Account (top), then Mail (bottom). Turn Archive messages on.

Wow, I should have noticed that. Thanks.

Also, the archive button works for me on OS X and the web interface.

It looks like the archive folder shows up on the webmail, as well as the mail app in Lion. I created a subfolder in the Archive folder, but webmail doesn't recognize it. It looks like it's not supported to work that way.

You can select the Archive folder in Mail, and do Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For > Trash. Also make sure to set your iCloud's account Preferences > Account > iCloud > Mailbox Behaviors > Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox, Store deleted messages on the server, and set Permanently erase deleted messages to Never.

Then deleting the message will actually move it to the Archive folder. As long as you don't manually delete that folder you should be OK.

I usually still grab that stuff and move it to a local folder every few months as a permanent archive.
