Apparently my iPhone has been failing to backup to icloud for the past 2 weeks. According to the phone, my last back up was on the 8th of May,. I got a notification warning me. I tried initiating backup manually, it failed. Icloud storage is sufficient. Anybody have any ideas? Apple support chat suggested resetting the phone and then restore the icloud backup, which is stupid since the last backup is outdated already.

You could try making a backup to your computer, resetting the iPhone, and restoring from the backup.

Afraid that will be the case. So much for the post-PC era... :D
I have not backed up my iPhone to my PC ever. Will see how this goes...

- Backed up to PC via iTunes
- Deleted old iCloud backup, still failed to backup
- Restore my iPhone via iTunes (downloading iOS14.5.1 at around 7GB? I feel sorry for those with 16GB iPhones) to factory, than restore using iTunes backup
- Initiated iCloud backup, still failed
- Reset network settings, rebooted
- Initiated iCloud backup again, now succesful

I wonder if all of these can be avoided if I did the network setting reset first....
Anyway, having to rely on iTunes seem archaic. In 2021, imo iOS should be able to figure this out by itself without having to rely on iTunes and a computer. Oh well, hopefully this can help others who might be facing the same issue.

Yeah, that might be it, although I would be interested in how does that relate to the iCloud backup. I might suggest it once I get back to the Apple chat support.
iCloud backup relies on Wifi. Obviously your phone was not getting a good and steady connection with your Wifi. When I was doing iCloud backups, I would have the same problem from time to time. Network setting reset always fixed the problem.

Interesting. I'm guessing iCloud is more finicky on the network stability, vs other apps (like simple safari browsing).
