iCloud backup

i upgraded to ios9 the other day. Yesterday while I was charging my iPhone 6 I got an alert saying I didn't have enough memory for a backup (my settings are for it to be done while it's plugged in). Yet when I go to iCloud it says I have 5 GB available?
Is this a bug? Are my settings messed up somewhere?

I tried that when I first noticed the issue... No luck.

Did you wait for the spinning loading wheel to stop spinning before trying to delete some of your application backups. If you don't wait for the wheel to stop spinning, you will not be able to delete the backup data (and hence reduce the size of your iCloud backup).

yes, since I mentioned I followed the steps in the link & that post has it in bold to make sure to wait for the wheel to stop spinning, yes I followed all those steps. Still says I don't have enough space. Still says 5GB free of 5GB.
By doing some searching on Google, it seems this is a known issue that many have been experiencing since Beta. Why they would go live without fixing it first is beyond me!

Yes, 8.2 GB even though all my previous backups were under 3 GB. I manually went in & turned everything off & it's still saying 8.2 GB.

Well, sounds like that's why it thinks there is not enough space. Have you checked to see what you have on the phone that might be taking up that much space?

I did, and I can't figure out why this one would be more than double all my previous ones.
So I bought some storage, $0.99 isn't breaking the bank Tried to do a backup, it said it would take 3 hours, no worries... then I got an error message that it failed. Tried again, and again. 3x it failed after about 2 hours.
My phone was plugged in, on wifi, locked... not in use.

I don't mind paying $12 a year for extra storage if I actually NEEDED it. The more & more I search on this issue, the more common it seems.

Yes, the "estimate the size of the next backup" feature is FUNDAMENTALLY broken in iOS 9. You just cannot trust it. Mine still claims that my next backup will be 0 bytes.

It took a couple of days (many attempts) to get iOS 9 to finally do an iCloud backup for me. I turned off a couple of things (like camera roll), and a couple of days later it says it finally was able to do it. Now they seem to backup each night.

So something in the 8.X to 9.0 upgrade REALLY messes up the backups. This is by far the buggiest major iOS release so far, from my experience.

What's interesting is I have mail turned off for icloud backup (I have no need to keep a backup of my mail). Yet when I go to storage > manage stroage It's showing mail as 5.2 MB. But I can't click on it to remove it.
I did finally get a backup to go through it's 17.1 GB. No idea why it's so large, but at least I now have a backup. Again, I have no problem paying $12 a year for storage. I just wish apple would fix this issue that's been reported since beta. Oh well.

That mail you mention is what's in your mailboxes on iCloud. Including anything in saved, trash, junk, sent and inbox folders. That's not a backup. That's just what is currently being used.

I had exactly the same problem when I upgraded to iOS 9. I did a fresh install of iOS 9 last night and I finally was able to recover all the "lost" space in iCloud and it finally allowed me to delete the phantom backups that were occupying the space.

I had 2 phantom backups eating about 200MB. I tried everything short of a restore because of my watch, so I gave Apple a call. First representative tried to tell me that the iPhone needs 200MB of iCloud space even if you don't have backup enabled. I immediately asked for someone else, was not going to waste my time with that nonsense. The second rep was able to delete 2 phantom iPad backups and got my entire 5GB available for usage again.

Great that they were able to delete the phantom backups from their end. I hope these phantom backups don't build up again. I don't have this problem with iOS 9 on my iPad though. Wonder if it's an iPhone specific issue.

Unsure. But the rep gave me his contact information and he said if it does it again, send him an email or call him and he will remove it and then forward it up to engineers. They must be somewhat aware of the issue if they are able to remove them. But I did two backups last night (iPad and iPhone) and my space is being accounted correctly. So it's a good sign!
