iCloud backups

Hate to create a new thread on this, but it would get buried in the others.

I was reading the EULA for iOS 5 after updating and noticed that the iCloud backups state they ONLY store iTunes-purchased music in the cloud. Does this mean we cannot (truly) backup our phone unless every song is iTunes-bought?

Example: getting new 4S on Friday, but leaving out of town that night (Vegas baby, Vegas). Was planning to do a fresh restore from my newly created iCloud backup from my current 4 to have my data, all while not having to turn on my computer and plug in. I have a sizeable collection of non-iTunes bought music (hey I go back to the Napster days). Will this not be able to be ported? If not, this REALLY sucks, and is a feature they need to get (most likely with iTunes match later in year?)

Can anyone confirm?

iTunes does't back-up or restore your music either, just data.

For this, you will have to sync your iPhone with your computer.

True, but say you needed to get a new phone. Does this mean you would have to plug into iTunes the old-fashioned way to download the music to the phone? Wow...

Thats the purpose of iTunes Match, though unfortunately it won't be released until later this month.

Under the standard free iCloud plan, all you're backing up in iCloud is your settings, app data, and calendar/contacts/etc. You're not actively backing up music at all, iTunes in the Cloud allows you to redownload songs at your convenience because Apple keeps track of what music you have bought on their end.

If you wipe your phone, all your media (ringtones, videos, music, etc) that was not bought from iTunes needs to be resynced from your computer.

By the end of this month, iTunes Match will be out. With that, you pay $25 a year, and then you get the right to store ALL your music on iCloud.

Now if only iTunes Match would do the same with Movies & TV Shows, then it would be the ultimate "no computer" solution.

I agree about the movies and tv shows. It would seem that if you purchased via iTunes they could store that info and allow you to re-download. Probably has something to do with DRM and deals with the studios. Hopefully Apple is working on this.

As it is if you have any of these you still need to backup locally. Bummer

You can redownlod tv shows you bought in iTunes, just not movies as of yet.

The key is to be patient. This is a huge project for Apple. They are working diligently to get it sorted out and into place. This is why I've chosen to wait and not migrate to Lion, iOS5, and iCloud just yet.

I'd rather let others be Apples public beta testers until it's all up and running properly. Early adopters that are embracing the new system now, know to expect problems. It's only natural with a huge project like this.
